Thanks to Henry at True Hoop for finding this nicely edited video showing the tough defenses Kobe Bryant faces and why he’s better than Michael Jordan. The video was put together by a Los Angeles Lakers fan that thinks the zone defense of today is tougher than the late 80′s and early 90′s defenses that Jordan faced. They’re wrong, but it’s still worth checking a few of the 10 minutes.
The “Who’s better: MJ or Kobe?” debate will never be settled no matter how much evidence either side presents to support their case. Over the summer Michael Jordan told a crowd at his basketball camp that if they were both in their prime he’d take Kobe no contest. I agree with Mike but it doesn’t matter. I’ll still be arguing about this 40 years from now.

Why could Jordan at max only score mid 60′s his whole career, I mean he played until what, late thirties? He had more than enough chances to go big (scoring wise) in at least one game. But he couldn’t seem to do it, hey maybe he didn’t want to. But Kobe put up 81rediculous points against a whole team that was practically guarding him, i mean who else was going to shoot the ball on the lakers. hahahah
I think that the reason Jordan never scored over mid 60s is because he didn’t care about breaking a record. Kobe wasn’t even playing a team that was in the top ten anymore so yeah I’m sure anyone could have had 81 points if they needed the attention. Jordan played so his team could win, he played with the help of his teammates. Jordan gave his all throughout the entire game in every game. Kobe plays the 1st quarter, scores well and then waits until the very end to start bringing the show. He saves all of his energy for the very end while everyone else plays the entire game and then he tries to make the winning shot so people can bow down to him. Not only that but anytime Kobe is touched he makes thes wild outrageous movements so that he will get a foul. Kobe is a punk he is only recognized because he brings attention to himself and wants people to worship him like they did with Mike. Mike didn’t even have to be as out there as Kobe to earn his rep. Kobe has to do things outside the court like jumping over things in order to get recognition.

MJ won the 6 champions without dominant big (Center) who can put up 15-20 points 10+ rebounds and 2+ blocks shot. Not only did MJ play against inferior competition but the Defensive Rating System proves it and you cant argue with that. Its on a per 100 possession system.
Good defensive teams as well as players today have thee best Defensive Rating in NBA history. Sorry, you cant argue with the Defensive numbers.
Not only does Kobe play against thee best 2 guard/ small forward defenders in NBA history, they are in his own conference. And if you think Gary Payton was the best to guard MJ, Kobe played against Payton 25 Times compared to MJ against Payton 15 times. Payton played the majority of his career in the West.
Shane Battier, Jason Kidd, Doug Christie, Raja Bell, Andre Kirlenko, Ron Artest, Gary Payton, and Bruce Bowen are all perennieal 1st and 2nd Team All Defense. All played Kobe 4 times a year.
Jordan’s defenders were a bunch of nobodies defensively. And since Scottie Pippen took on the best perimeter player on the opposing team, that meant Jordan didnt have to expand as much energy as Bryant who does guard the oppossing teams best player.
