A Canadian doctor who’s worked with Olympic medalists, NFL players, and Tiger Woods is suspected of supplying athletes with performance-enhancing drugs. Canadian police arrested Anthony Galea in Toronto on Oct. 15 because the drug Actovegin was found in his medical bag at the US/Canadian border in September. Actovegin is taken from a calf’s blood and is illegal to possess, sell, or import in the US. Galea’s assistant had the medical bag in her car when crossing the border.

Galea treated Tiger Woods in February and March to help with Woods’ slow healing knee. That’s not early enough to have been involved in Tiger’s growth earlier this decade. The New York Times contacted Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg about the story and Steinberg emailed back with a request.

When asked for comment about Mr. Woods’s involvement with Dr. Galea, Mark Steinberg, of I.M.G., responded in an e-mail message: “I would really ask that you guys don’t write this? If Tiger is NOT implicated, and won’t be, let’s please give the kid a break.”

It’s hard to read the tone of Steinberg’s voice, and he’s probably beaten down from Tiger’s growing gallery of women, but that’s not exactly killing the story. “If Tiger is NOT implicated” doesn’t sound like he’s ruling out the chance of Woods having used PEDs. The “And won’t be” part is where it’s tough to read. He could be saying it with a confident tone that means there’s no way his client is dirty. Or he could mean if the NYT knows Woods isn’t an essential part of the story then they shouldn’t use his name at all. I’ll hope for the best but the last two weeks and change have shown that anything is possible.
