Tiger Woods trailed Padraig Harrington by one shot on the 16th at Firestone when he did what Tiger does: Make amazing shots. Woods’ third shot on the par-5 16th sat 178 yards away from hole, but Tiger dropped his ball from the heavens to within a foot of the flag. Harrington fell apart that.
In fairness to Harrington, PGA officials told him and Woods they were on the clock at the 16th, and the added sense of urgency proved too much. Tiger agreed.
“Like I was telling him out there, ‘I’m sorry that John got in the way of a great battle,’ because it was such a great battle for 16 holes,” Woods said. “We’re going at it, head-to-head, and unfortunately that happened. Paddy and I will definitely do it again.”
Asked if he won because of an 8-iron or a stopwatch, Woods replied, “Both.”
The win was Tiger’s seventh at Firestone and 70th for his career. He stands three behind Jack Nicklaus and 13 behind Sam Snead for all-time wins. Something tells me he’ll break those records.
