SO WHAT DID DONOVAN MCNABB SAY?

This video is from Donovan’s blog at Yardbarker, and has nothing to do with the Real Sports interview. I just liked the fact that D-Mac kept it real enough to roll with the criticism.. I’m sure some guys would weed out the negativity..

The latest McNabb mini-drama involves statements that he made to James Brown on HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. The comments aren’t outlandish or even new, but since they come from #5, they become fodder for the talking heads… The same talking heads that tried to start up the McNabb supports dogfighting talk, proving they hadn’t read the entire quote. Here’s D-Mac’s latest while on HBO:

DM: There are not that many African-American quarterbacks, so we have to do a little bit extra.

JB: Wait a minute. Why do you have to do a little extra?

DM: Because the percentage of us playing this position, which people didn’t want us to play this position, is low.

JB: So Therefore?

DM: We do a little extra.

JB: Based on perception or is it real?

DM: It’s real.

JB: What’s real?

DM: I pass for 300 yards, our team wins by 7 “ah he coulda made this throw here. We woulda scored more points if he woulda done this.”

JB: But doesn’t every quarterback go through that?

DM: Not everybody.

JB: You don’t think that Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer, the white quarterbacks, isn’t the press as tough on them in those situations as the black quarterbacks?

DM: Let me start by saying I love those guys, but they don’t get criticized as much as we do. They don’t.

Like I said, it’s not really anything new. Black quarterbacks have always been held to a different standard. Ask James Harris, ask Tony Dungy. Ask Warren Moon what it was like going to Canada to prove himself. It’s not the extra, some times unwarranted, criticism, but the lack of opportunity and equality that has plagued black quarterbacks.

McNabb takes more than his fair share of crap, but sometimes that’s the price of being on top. Peyton Manning was criticized as a loser and choke while being the league’s best statistical qb so nobody’s above reproach. Donovan has to realize, that as one of the top quarterbacks in the league, and the best black quarterback, he’s always gonna wear a target… A target that a ring is definitely too small to cover.
