Serena Williams Takes Out Venus Williams At The U.S. Open

September 4th, 2008 | by HG |

Serena and Venus Williams squared off in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open making it the 17th time the sisters have faced each other in competition. The series was tied at eight apiece until Serena defeated Venus 7-6, 7-6 Wednesday night in New York.

Even though Venus lost in straight sets the match could have gone either way. Serena had 101 total points to Venus’ 98 and thought she would battle her sister for three sets.

“I thought for sure we’d be in three sets,” Serena said. “I thought, ‘I’m going to go change my dress because I’m really sweaty and put a new one on.’ And then I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I won’t have to do that.”’

Serena and Venus have been knocked in the past for playing like crap when they face each other. Some have gone as far as to say that their father Richard Williams would pre-determine which of his daughters would win when they played. Hopefully their play at Wimbledon and in the U.S. Open has put that talk to rest.
