Secretariat Destroys the Field at the 1973 Belmont Stakes

Legendary racehorse Secretariat took to the track at the Belmont Stakes on June 9, 1973 needing to win the race to become the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. He was set as a 1-10 favorite in the five-horse race after winning the Preakness and Kentucky Derby in dominating fashion. The race started with Secretariat and Sham jumping out to an early 10-length lead, but Sham couldn’t hold the pace and Secretariat ran away to history.

The announcer says 25 lengths but Secretariat won the 1973 Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths, and set a still standing world record for 1½ miles on dirt with a time of 2:24. Sham tried to battle Secretariat early on and paid for it by burning out and finishing last. You can tell by the roar of the crowd and the excitement of the announcers that everybody was pulling for Secretariat and the horse responded by carving his name in the record books.

Look at the lead Secretariat has in the picture.. That’s what the Patriots beating the Giants by 40 points in Super Bowl XLII to cap their perfect season would’ve looked like. Affirmed won the Triple Crown five years after Secretariat and stands as the last winner, but no horse showed the domination of Secretariat in 1973.
