The Miami Dolphins drafted quarterback John Beck 40th overall in the 2007 draft. He served as the third string QB in Washington in 2010 so things clearly didn’t work out in Miami. Beck has four career starts in the NFL but with Rex Grossman being a free agent and Donovan McNabb being excommunicated he thinks now is his time to shine. Just ask him.
Beck joined Adam Schein and Rich Gannon on Sirius XM Radio and expressed joy when asked how he felt about getting a shot because the Redskins are getting rid of McNabb.
“I have to say I’m glad it happened,” Beck said. “If I want my opportunity, I have to have stuff like this happen so I can get an opportunity.
“If McNabb stays as starter of the Washington Redskins, I remain a backup, and I want to be a starter. So, I have to hope for things like this to happen.”
Beck’s point is correct but he didn’t have to say it the way he did. Most backups want to be, hope to be, or believe they should be the starter. Sure they’re cheering the team on from the bench but they’re also praying the guy ahead of them twists his ankle. But players don’t do what Beck did and say they’re glad to see somebody go. Especially in the NFL where guys are never too far away from needing Payday loans. No worries for Beck though. If he doesn’t play well I’m sure he’ll be glad when his backup is given the opportunity to be the starter.
