NFL players packing heat for protection

NFL Players Arming Themselves For Protection

Recent shootings of NFL players has league members picking up guns for protection

There was a recent spike in gun sales following the election of Barack Obama as the next POTUS. Most of the gun buyers are people that are worried Obama is gonna drop the hammer on gun laws, but there’s another group out there stockpiling weapons: NFL players.

The latest edition of ESPN the Magazine will hit newsstands on Friday and in it NFL players speak openly about gun ownership and the threat of violence against them. Their concerns are rooted in the murders of Darrent Williams and Sean Taylor.

From Yahoo! News:

The response has been an escalation in security for the players and NFL Players’ Association president Kevin Mawae, of the Tennessee Titans, estimates half his team mates carry guns.

“If I had to guess about our locker room, I’d say it’s 50-50 when it comes to gun ownership,” he told the magazine.

“I don’t own a handgun. I have a hunting rifle. My job is to protect my family. If someone comes into my house? Game’s on,” he said.

Mawae’s not walking around strapped, but Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor is pissed because he can’t.

“League officials tell us we need to take measures to protect ourselves. But the NFL says we can’t have guns in the facility even in the parking lot. Crooks know this. They can just sit back and wait for us to drive off, knowing we won’t have anything in our vehicle from point A to point B.”

This is a tough call. The athletes need to be able to protect themselves but I also don’t wanna see player x involved in a shooting whether he’s defending himself or not. Like Mawae said, if somebody breaks in your house then you gotta handle your biz, but a bunch of NFL players packing 24/7 will probably lead to a player going to jail instead of being a hero.
