MTV Looking for Athletes That Are Willing to Come Out

MTV Wants Gay Athletes to Come Out

Depending on where you look for the statistic at least three percent and as high as 10 percent of the United States is gay.. As in they prefer members of the same sex. Sports is a microcosm of society so it’s safe to assume a small percentage of our favorite athletes also play for the other team.

MTV’s True Life is playing the odds in hopes of exploiting an athlete getting an athlete to come out of the closet to their team. And the world.

TRUE LIFE: I’M COMING OUT TO MY TEAM

Are you planning to come out to your teammates? Have you been afraid or hesitant to come out to your sports team as gay, bisexual, or transsexual but are now planning to reveal yourself? Perhaps you’ve already come out to your friends and now have to face the upcoming season with teammates who still think you’re straight? Or maybe you’re unsure of how your fellow athletes would react if they knew, and thus have not come out to anyone?

Whatever your situation may be, if you are planning to come out to your teammates and appear to be between the ages of 15 and 28, MTV wants to hear from you. Please email us at comingout@mtvn.com and be sure to include your name, location and phone number.

Other than being ostracized by teammates, getting heckled by fans, and losing money I can’t think of one reason why a professional athlete would stay in the closet. Openly gay former NFL player Esera Tauolo spoke to The Kansas City Star about Larry Johnson’s use of gay slurs on Twitter and with the media. He also talked about athletes coming out and gay players in the NFL.

“It would be amazing if all these gay athletes would come out, and they would see how many athletes who are gay are premier players. But we live in a society that doesn’t accept us for who we are. We live in a society that views the word ‘gay’ or gay person as weak.”

Tuaolo, who was born in Hawaii and was a second-round draft choice by Green Bay after he played collegiately at Oregon State, said there are more than 10 homosexual players in the league today.

No matter how many gay players are in the NFL, the NBA, or MLB we haven’t reached a place where they can play in the open. An active superstar coming out of the closet is still years away from happening.
