I was right there with the rest of the world on June 2, 2010, criticizing MLB umpire Jim Joyce for missing a call at first base and taking away Armando Galarraga’s perfect game. I think “cockblocked history” were my exact words.
Joyce admits that he “kicked the shit out of” the call. Owning up to his mistake made everybody more forgiving even though Bud Selig should’ve taken the pressure off of Joyce (and his family) by reversing the call.
I spoke with Joyce at the 2010 ESPN the Magazine “ESPY Style Studio” (he’s presenting an ESPY with Armando Galarraga) about moving past his worst moment. He’s as stand-up now as he was the night of the call. I apologize in advance for the lighting.
