G-A-Y are the letters of his name. Cutting and slashing are the aspects of his game. Everybody knew Rudy Gay had game coming out of UConn but he fell into the NBA black hole known as the Memphis Grizzlies and his star was dimmed. Followers of the League know Gay’s game -active, high-flying, decent shot, match-up nightmare- but the casual sports fan might not know him.

Gay is currently 10th in the league in scoring at 21.3 a game and averages 17 for his career. He’s having a career year in points, rebounds, steals, field goal percentage, and three-point field goal percentage. He’ll be a restricted free-agent this summer and he’s looking for five years and $65 million. The Grizzlies offered Gay five years at $50 million but he turned down the offer and the two sides couldn’t reach a deal by the deadline.

I’d like to see Memphis keep Gay with OJ Mayo, Marc Gasol, Mike Conley, and Hasheem Thabeet as a solid foundation to build around. What the Grizzlies have shown is that they’ll dump salaries for pennies on the dollar.
