The year was 1987. Jheri curl juice flowed freely and Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dickerson was about to be traded to the Indianapolis Colts. He didn’t know about the trade when he threw a classic back to camp pool party. The video has everything from Jim Brown being thrown into the pool to Sheryl Lee Ralph complaining when the DJ played The 2 Live Crew. The highlight is Dickerson hosting a swimsuit contest.
The video is over an hour and a half and looks and sounds like a party in 1987. The DJ plays Janet Jackson’s “Control” and Prince’s “Housequake” repeatedly and the fellas are sportin’ the short-shorts. Even the guy doing the voiceover sounds like a stereotypical 80s Quiet Storm host. Here are some of the highlights:
00:20 Tiny “Zeus” Liston in his John Stockton specials
01:35 Sheryl Lee Ralph hits the scene
08:19 The Cabbage Patch is in full effect
16:07 Jim Brown dancing
17:08 Eric Dickerson begins emceeing swimsuit contest
18:28 Jim Brown moving closer to swimsuit contest
19:20 Dickerson encouraging woman to “Take something off”
19:41 More encouragement from Dickerson
40:09 Sheryl Lee Ralph complains about the DJ playing “We Want Some Pussy”
47:00 A girl goes topless but bystanders block the view
56:00 Dickerson awarding swimsuit contest prize money
1:06:25 Jim Brown continuing dance when his partner walks away
1:15:00 Jim Brown talks about Eric Dickerson as a running back
1:26:50 Eric Dickerson talks about the party
1:27:45 Los Angeles Rams tight end David Hill slurring and talking about Eric Dickerson
Not exactly the Vikings Sex Boat Party, but funny to see athletes letting an entire party be videotaped. Fast-forward 20 years and at least three different camera phone versions of “Dickerson pool party” would’ve been on Youtube the same night. For now there’s only one although I know there has to be some classic “80s and 90s athletes doing dumb shit” videos floating around on VHS. I guess we’ll have to wait for TMZClassicSports.com to see them.
