Dez Bryant on Roy Williams: He’s Just Joking Around

Yesterday I mentioned how people were praising Dallas Cowboys rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant for doing the right things to start his NFL career. He was the first 2010 first-round pick to sign a contract and also the first Cowboy on the field for training camp. Things have changed in the last 24 hours.

Bryant refused to carry the pads of veteran wide receiver Roy Williams, breaking a long-held rookie rite of passage. Williams has promised retribution. Dez told Jason Minnix of the “The Chris & Jason Show” on The Zone 1250 in San Antonio that he’s not carrying the pads because Roy’s not serious. Rookies…

Dez has to carry the pads. Looking like a primadonna teammate is worse than supposedly losing some face. Every rookie goes through some sort of hazing and there’s no reason Bryant should be any different. Roy Williams had to carry pads, Tom Brady probably had to carry Drew Bledsoe’s pads and in the NBA every year a rookie has to carry Vince Carter’s pads. It’s part of life and Bryant needs to roll with it and let the vets have their fun. What’s carrying gear or suitcases and picking up dinner tabs when you’re about to be the best Cowboys’ receiver since Michael Irvin?

In positive Dez Bryant news, his team is favored in the week one NFL odds and he continues to wow the crowd at the Cowboys training camp. Check out his catch after the offense runs a flea flicker:

There’s no question about the game. Hopefully he doesn’t let pride derail a promising beginning.
