Chompin’ it Up with Tim Tebow

The collective eyebrow of fans and sports media alike was raised when the Denver Broncos selected Tim Tebow with the 25th overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft. Immediately, speculation began as to how the Broncos would use their new multi-purpose QB. Would Broncos coach Josh McDaniels implement a Wildcat package or come up with some other innovative scheme to take full advantage of the Gator phenom’s unique skill set?

Tebow talked to us at the 2010 ESPN the Magazine “ESPY Style Studio” about making the transition from college football to the NFL. It’s safe to say he’s focused on getting better.

It’s still probably a safe assumption that Kyle Orton will enter the season as the starting QB – with Tebow battling it out with newcomer Brady Quinn for the second spot. McDaniels has recently indicated he will only go with two active quarterbacks on game day – as he did in 2009. My guess is: Tebow’s versatility wins out over Quinn’s experience.

The Broncos offense figures to struggle without All-Pro receiver Brandon Marshall and his 100 plus catches this season. Running backs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter will face plenty of stacked fronts as defenses show no fear of a less than stellar receiving corps. Fair or not, Kyle Orton will likely shoulder the blame for the offensive shortcomings of this team – especially with a hotshot rookie standing in the wings.

It won’t take the Mile High faithful long to call for the former Heisman Trophy winner to get his first pro start. I’ve felt from the beginning that Tebow was not drafted to spend the 2010 season as simply an understudy – patiently learning the intricacies of being an NFL quarterback. He will be on the field early and possibly often as a rookie.
