Usain Bolt cemented his status as The World’s Fastest Man in the 100m final at the Beijing Olympics. Bolt’s record setting time of 9.69 was .003 seconds faster than the mark he set in May, and it could have been better if Usain hadn’t slowed down to glorify himself the final 20 meters.

Physicist from the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo decided to take on the task of figuring out exactly how fast Usain Bolt could have run. The physicist analyzed position, speed, and acceleration using footage of Bolt and runner-up Richard Thompson.

“We estimate that he could have finished the race in a time between 9.55 and 9.61,” Norwegian physicist Hans Eriksen said Friday in a telephone interview.

“We don’t mean to say that this is the final and ultimate result,” Eriksen was quoted as saying in New Scientist magazine. “Instead, it’s a fun application and simple physics.”

A time of 9.55 would have rocked the Olympics, but I think Usain Bolt did the right thing. By slowing down with the record in hand Bolt has turned every race he runs into must see tv. The world knows he can run faster and is waiting for him to set a new record.

Iranian authorities are considering whether or not to allow state television to broadcast women’s events at the upcoming Beijing Olympics. In question is the dress of the female competitors. Iranian women are required to wear an Islamic hijab when participating in sporting events, which must cover the head and hair and hide the female form. Since the other countries don’t follow Iran’s Islamic dress code the events can not be shown on television.

There’s currently a push in Iran to make an exception for this year’s Olympics.

For this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing, however, Iranian authorities might allow state television to broadcast the women’s events. Ali Asghar Purmohammadi, who is responsible for broadcasting sports programs for Iran’s state-run television, has said he is pressing Iranian authorities to give special permission to show women competing in the Olympic Games next month.

There are just three women among the 53 Iranian athletes who will compete in the Beijing Olympics from August 8-24, with one woman each competing in rowing, archery, and tae kwon do.

The Iranian government will probably stick with tradition but rowing, archery, and tae kwon do have to be three of the least sexy sports in the summer games. It could be worse.

The first two things you’ll notice about this women’s track meet compilation video are one, it’s NSFW and two, there are a lot of perv cameramen working women’s track events.

Water polo looks hard enough without making the women try to play in a lacrosse mask and long-sleeved sack.

Unless the temperature was around 40 degrees F there’s no excuse for forcing these ladies to put on this gear to play softball.

I’d say there are some philosophical differences between the United States approach to women’s softball and the Iranian approach.

Iranian women should start joining auto racing leagues. They’ll be covered from head to toe at all times. That’s assuming women are allowed to drive in Iran.

Leo Walcott is lucky to be alive let alone playing high school sports. When he was 5 years old he fell 4 stories and landed on his feet. According to a witness, he jumped up right away even with a broken leg. He immediately fell unconscious when the blood rushed to his brain. Doctors had to drill holes into his head to drain blood. He had to have some of his skull removed, and was told he would never play contact sports again.

He began to play soccer at 13, but his mom took him off the team because she feared for his health. A few years later the family learned of a way for Leo to participate in sports… He could have a titanium plate put in his head.

The surgery was a success and Leo returned to his high school track practice two weeks after his surgery. He ran in the 800 meters last Tuesday, clocking in at 2:23. That’s 8 seconds off of his normal pace, but damn good considering everything he’s been through. Proving that he’s tougher than the average bear, Leo Walcott is going to play football in the fall.
