A global ticketing scam has taken advantage of hundreds of people hoping to attend the Summer Olympics in Beijing. The phony tickets were sold via internet on a website with official looking Olympic logos that were attractive enough to sucker people from the US to down under.

From the Times Online:

The website, www.beijingtickets.com, is being investigated after the International Olympic Committee received complaints from hundreds of people in Britain, the US and Australia who had handed over up to £30,000 for tickets to events in Beijing, only to find the tickets did not exist. The IOC is launching legal action in a Californian court today to shut down the site.

The site is currently down, but it’s too little too late. The company has been getting over on people all year.

The website has previously been accused of fleecing British music fans in a similar scam. In March a newspaper investigation found that the site’s parent company, XL & H Ltd had sold non-existent tickets to Take That fans for concerts in Manchester and Glasgow.

There’s no word on how people that paid for the Olympic tickets will be reimbursed, but this once again proves why Joe Paterno doesn’t own a computer.

You probably have a better chance of winning the lottery, a Nobel Peace Prize, and a date with Bobby Knight on the same day than you do of scoring tickets for a sporting event in Boston. Seats are gonna be hard to find when the Patriots and Red Sox have delivered multiple championships this decade, and the Celtics are primed to get their first championship of the 21st century.

So what do you do when you wanna go to the game but seats are hard to come by? If you’re Taylor Roth, a senior inspector at the State Board of Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters, looking the other way during inspections is the answer.

A vice president of P.J. Riley & Co. allegedly gave inspector Taylor Roth two tickets to several games from 2004 to 2006 in violation of the state’s conflict of interest law, according to the Ethics Commission.

“Roth received the Red Sox tickets as a reward for permits he had issued and/or inspections that he had performed of P.J. Riley’s work as a senior inspector and/or to influence such official acts that he would perform as a senior inspector,” according to a complaint issued by the Ethics Commission.

What the State Ethics Commission is trying to say is that Roth did what 99 percent of us would do.. He got the hook up. Unfortunately for Taylor Roth, this hook up comes with a visit to the Ethics Commission and the possibility of a $2000 fine for every violation he’s found to have committed.. I bet he’ll hit up a scalper ticket broker next time. He’ll end up paying around the same amount without having to risk his job.

Tickets to the big game are had to come by.. Especially in a one trick pony town like Tuscaloosa, Alabama. If you can score some tickets to a UA game, you’re the man. If you steal some tickets to an Alabama game, you work for UPS.

Tuscaloosa Police investigators have charged three UPS workers with stealing University of Alabama football tickets and selling them to a ticket broker. The suspects worked in UPS’s warehouse and are accused of using fake address labels to divert the packages from their destinations.

What is the world coming to when you can’t trust some guys working in a warehouse? I’m glad to see the geniuses thought the plan all the way through.. No way they get caught for a stupid reason.

The scheme was uncovered when people who bought the stolen tickets arrived at the UA-Western Carolina season opener on Sept. 1 to find their seats already occupied.

Foolproof. Way to go fellas. Oh well, I’m sure there’s always work in the moonshinin’ biz.
