I keep flirting with the big weekend but I’ve fallen apart in the second half of the last two weeks. I’m 12-5 in the morning games and 5-8-1 in the afternoon/night/Monday night games. The inconsistency has limited me to a barely above average rate. I went 9-7 last week (24-19-4 on the year) with brilliants picks like the Niners over the Chiefs and the Dolphins over the Jets. I had the Falcons over the Saints, but so did a lot of people so no big deal there. I’m putting together two solid halves this week and expect to finish at least four games over .500. Who’s coming with me?

Teams with a bye week: Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
My picks are in bold type.

Denver Broncos +6.5 @ Tennessee Titans: There’s no way the Denver Broncos get roped into five personal fouls and commit two turnovers inside Tennessee’s five-yard line like the Giants did last week.

Baltimore Ravens +1 @ Pittsburgh Steelers: Most people thought the Steelers would be lucky to go 2-2 without Roethlisberger and now they’re looking at 4-0. The Ravens need this game more and probably win by a field goal.

Cincinnati Bengals -3 @ Cleveland Browns: The Bengals swept their AFC North opponents last year and they’ve already out field goal’d the Ravens this year. Seneca Wallace looks like he’s getting a better feel for the offense, and the Bengals passing game is shaky, but I’m still going with Cincy.

Detroit Lions +14.5 @ Green Bay Packers: What do you do after a tough loss? Order up the Detroit Lions. Philly lost to Green Bay and then went to Detroit to pick up their first win, Minnesota lost to Miami and then took out their frustrations on the Lions, and now Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and the Packers get to beat up on the team a lot of folks picked as the 2010 surprise team.

Carolina Panthers +13.5 @ New Orleans Saints: I’m a big fan of Panthers receiver Steve Smith, but memo to his teammates: Keep your helmets on. The losing and poor quarterback play has to have him ready to beat up somebody and that means he’s swinging on somebody close to him.

San Francisco 49ers +7 @ Atlanta Falcons: Firing the offensive coordinator isn’t going to make much of a difference for the Niners this week. The flame under head coach Mike Singletary’s chair are turned up two clicks after the loss.

Seattle Seahawks -1 @ St. Louis Rams: What the hell are you supposed to do with this game? The Seahawks have been strong at home in wins over the overhyped Niners and always slow to start San Diego Chargers but got handled in Denver. St. Louis sucks but they rose up and pounded a suspect Washington defense. When in doubt, go against the Rams.

New York Jets -5.5 @ Buffalo Bills: Potential trap game as the Jets look ahead to next week’s Monday night tilt against the Vikings. If the Jets are for real and as bad as they claim they will beat the dog crap out of Buffalo. And you have to give Mark Sanchez his props. He’s played some good football after looking Leinart-esque in Week 1. The AFC East is in big trouble if he keeps playing like this and Santonio Holmes finds his place in the offense.

Indianapolis Colts -7.5 @ Jacksonville Jaguars: Hard to make any kind of a case for the Jaguars other than division rival familiarity. Colts roll.

Houston Texans -3 @ Oakland Raiders: The Raiders are good for one or two wins a season that give their fans hope. That hope is short-lived but it’s better than the soul-snapping losses like last week to Arizona.

Arizona Cardinals +8 @ San Diego Chargers: The Chargers are following their Norv Turner pattern of slow starts but his year is going to be a little different. Vincent Jackson is holding out and rooking running back Ryan Matthews is banged up. These are problems that will haunt S.D. down the stretch when they normally flourish. Until then, they get to slap around the Cardinals.

Washington Redskins +6 @ Philadelphia Eagles: The most talked about game of the week because of Donovan McNabb’s return to Philadelphia and the resurgence of Michael Vick. The Eagles can’t allow McNabb to walk out of there with a win but as any Philly fan knows, this team is good for choking away a home game to the Redskins and then splitting the series in D.C. On the flip-side, the Redskins have the NFL’s worst defense. Worst than even Jacksonville and Detroit, two teams Vick beat on the road.

Chicago Bears +4 @ New York Giants: This is one of the lines that make you ask “what does Vegas know?” The Giants melted down against the Titans, and were stomped the week before in Indianapolis. The Bears haven’t looked great at all times, and they should’ve loss to the Lions but more than a field goal from the G-men seems like too much.

Monday
New England Patriots -1 @ Miami Dolphins: Huge game for these teams because the AFC playoff race is already heated. The North, South, and East have three teams making a legitimate run for the playoffs (based on record this year and performance last year) and the West could have two teams depending on what you think of San Diego and Kansas City. The Dolphins own Brady in Miami and they need the game more since they’re at home but I’m going against all of that with New England.

I went 8-6-1 last week to move my record to 15-12-4. I was on fire in the morning last week, going 6-2 (The Carolina-Tampa game was off when I did my picks.) and then I crumbled in the afternoon. I had the Giants, Patriots, Raiders and Seahawks. Not one of them covered. And I got a lucky push with Houston’s overtime field goal against Washington. If Kubiak doesn’t call the BS timeout on the Redskins’ field goal, I lose that game too. I’ve never seen somebody’s fortunes change so quickly.. Except for Kevin Kolb.

Road teams are the theme this week. My picks are in bold type.

Tennessee Titans +3 @ New York Giants- There’s no telling whether Vince Young will finish the game but I’m banking that Chris Johnson doesn’t get shutdown two weeks in a row. Mix in the Giants tiring of head coach Tom Coughlin’s iron-fist and you get a Titans win.

Buffalo Bills +14.5 @ New England Patriots- The Patriots have the bitter taste of the Jets loss in their mouths and the Bills are on the go against until further notice list. New England should have this covered by halftime.

Cleveland Browns +10.5 @ Baltimore Ravens- Is there any explanation needed?

Pittsburgh Steelers -2.5 @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Charlie Batch is making his first start in 100 years against the 2-n-f-n-0 Bucs. Two things nobody saw coming. Pittsburgh’s defense has locked up its first two opponents and now they face Josh Freeman.. The line seems too good to be true but I’m rolling with it anyways.

Cincinnati Bengals -3 @ Carolina Panthers- Carson Palmer threw for 345 yards in a Week 1 loss to the Patriots and for 167 yards in last week’s win over the Ravens. This week he gets the yards and the victory.

Atlanta Falcons +4 @ New Orleans Saints- You can say the Saints defense made timely plays against the 49ers on Monday night but I chalk the turnovers up to San Fran’s ineptitude. Meanwhile, Atlanta hung with the Steelers in Pittsburgh and stomped the birdshit out of the Cardinals. I like Atlanta for the straight-up upset.

San Francisco 49ers -2.5 @ Kansas City Chiefs- This makes sense. The 0-2 team is favored on the road over the 2-0 team. And it makes even more sense considering it was just two weeks ago that the Niners suffered communication problems in a raucous stadium.. A stadium that will have nothing on Arrowhead on Sunday. When it doesn’t make sense I go with it. Feel free to call me an idiot Sunday afternoon.

Detroit Lions +11.5 @ Minnesota Vikings- The Lions have lost their first two games by a combined eight points and now they’re getting almost two touchdowns against the limping Vikings. Yes they’re looking better but I’m not ready to jump on the bandwagon even with the points.

Dallas Cowboys +3 @ Houston Texans- Dallas hasn’t done a lot to warrant my pick but their season goes on life support if they lose and I’m riding the desperation. It’s only life support because even at 0-3, who in the NFC East is running away from the pack?

The Texans are undefeated but their D gives up a ton of yardage. The Cowboys offense will suddenly look rejuvenated. Even if it’s only for a week.

Washington Redskins -3.5 @ St. Louis Rams- Blowing a 17 point lead to the Texans followed by losing to the Rams would make the Redskins the King of Frauds. A four-point win sounds about right.

Philadelphia Eagles -3 @ Jacksonville Jaguars- On Monday Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Kevin Kolb was the starter. On Tuesday he said Vick is the starter and there’s no way of telling if Kolb would still be on the team past the trade deadline. By Thursday Reid was saying Kolb’s not going anywhere and that having two capable quarterbacks is a “beautiful thing.” Only for the sports media Andy. Either way, Kolb or Vick will be moved by the deadline.

Indianapolis Colts -5.5 @ Denver Broncos- I’m just not sold on the Broncos. I don’t know what it is but I see me picking against them almost every week. That line of thinking cost me last week and it most likely will again.

San Diego Chargers -5.5 @ Seattle Seahawks- There wasn’t anything as predictable as the San Diego Chargers and GM AJ Smith bungling the Vincent Jackson situation. Just thought I’d mention that. As far as the game, the Seahawks look like a so-so home team and a go against road team. They’ll keep this one close.

Oakland Raiders +4.5 @ Arizona Cardinals- This game should be dubbed the Michael Vick Bowl because both of these teams should be on the phone with Philly trying to pry No. 7 from the Eagles. I’d really like to the Raiders here but I can’t trust them on the road.

New York Jets +2 @ Miami Dolphins- This is going to be another painful game to watch. Offensively and physically. It won’t be as bad as Jets-Ravens but the under 35.5 looks good right? Sanchize is on the road, Revis is gimpy and Braylon Edwards might still be a little buzzed after blowing a 0.16 earlier in the week. Plus, you know how many Ines Sainz lookin’ chicks there are in Miami? Too many distractions for NY.

Green Bay Packers -3 @ Chicago Bears- Jay Cutler went to Dallas and outplayed Tony Romo and comes home to find himself a three-point dog to Aaron Rodgers and the Pack. Green Bay is the early favorite in the NFC. Does a Bears win make them the team to beat in the conference?

I know I’m rolling with a lot of road teams. If you’re looking for a different voice try former NBA player Gary Payton and his NFL picks. Check out the video below to find out who The Glove likes.

It’s still early but there’s a chance I’ll be the Rex Ryan of picking NFL games. What I mean is, I’ll talk a good game like I did last week but when it comes down to it I’m putting up a 7-6-3 performance.. The only positive about the record is that I’m over .500. Even if it’s barely. This week I’m gettin’ my god damned snack on.

My picks are in bold type.

Sunday
Kansas City Chiefs +1.5 @ Cleveland Browns: It didn’t take long for Jake Delhomme to show Browns fans why he was available in the offseason. Cleveland was on their way to being 1-0 until Jake went Jake and started throwing the ball away. I think Kansas City’s new found speed travels.

Buffalo Bills +13.5 @ Green Bay Packers: Clay Matthews was in full beast mode on the road last week against Philly. Imagine how jacked he’s gonna be for the Packers’ home ppener. Be afraid Buffalo.

Baltimore Ravens -1.5 @ Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals, Batman and Robin got worked in New England but they owned the Ravens last year. They get their first win of the season against their hard-hitting rivals.

Pittsburgh Steelers +5 @ Tennessee Titans: You have to figure Dennis Dixon factors into the point spread so if Ben Roethlisberger was playing Pittsburgh would be getting one or two. Tennessee is at least a touchdown better than the Steelers no matter who’s at QB.

Philadelphia Eagles -6 @ Detroit Lions: It wouldn’t be Philadelphia without a quarterback controversy. Backup Michael Vick faces off against backup Sean Hill. Eagles pull out a close one and Kevin Kolb becomes more sympathetic to Donovan McNabb’s time in Philly.

Chicago Bears +7.5 @ Dallas Cowboys: The Bears should be 0-1 if not for those damn NFL rules getting in the way and the Cowboys would be 1-0 if they weren’t idiots.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers OFF @ Carolina Panthers: Thank you.

Arizona Cardinals +6.5 @ Atlanta Falcons: Larry Fitzgerald is a good guy by all accounts but he’s gonna murder somebody if the Cardinals don’t get a QB that can get him the ball on a consistent basis.

Miami Dolphins +5.5 @ Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings defense did a great job of holding the New Orleans Saints offense in check. Too bad their offensive play calling was terrible. Adrian Peterson looked good in the first half so Chili gave him less than 10 carries in the second half. Brett Favre looked tired in the second half so Chili had him throw it down after down. Minnesota beats Miami just because it’s a home game. I think it’s close though.

St. Louis Rams +3.5 @ Oakland Raiders: I thought the Raiders signing Jason Campbell was a good move and I’m not ready to bail on that opinion. But I’m close. The Raiders’ offensive line didn’t do Campbell any favors but his decision making was shaky. He’ll play well enough this week to get Oaktown the win.

Seattle Seahawks +3.5 @ Denver Broncos: Denver will be bad all year and although I thought the same about Seattle (give ‘em time), they’re gonna give the illusion that I’m wrong for a couple of weeks.

Houston Texans -3 @ Washington Redskins: It only took Donovan McNabb one game to beat the Dallas Cowboys this year after failing in three attempts with the Eagles last season. Let’s be honest, the football gods (dumbass play calling and dumbass offensive line play) handed the Skins that game. They’re not gonna be as fortunate this week.

Jacksonville Jaguars +7 @ San Diego Chargers: I accounted for the typical Norv Turner start for the Chargers by taking the Chiefs last week. The Bolts pull their record even against a Jaguars team that’s not gonna like their trip to the West Coast.

New England Patriots -3 @ New York Jets: Tom Brady dissed the Jets and “Hard Knocks”, Rex Ryan fired back, Randy Moss is unhappy, and none of that matters because Mark Sanchez can’t pass for 100 yards in a game. All the junk Ryan talked will be just that if the Jets lose this game and then next week at Miami.

New York Giants +5 @ Indianapolis Colts: Manning vs. Manning. I heard the NFL is changing the rules just for this game so that if the teams are tied after four quarters an Oreo cookie lick-off will be used to determine the winner. No way the Colts fall to 0-2.

Monday
New Orleans Saints -5.5 @ San Francisco 49ers: An embarrassing Week 1 loss combined with the goofiness that happens on MNF have me liking the Niners this week. Not the greatest reasoning in the world but sometimes picks aren’t about reason.

If you think my picks are shady and you’re looking for an expert you should check out Allen Eastman’s 99 system. His NFL Betting System is 53-22 over the last two seasons and the first week of 2010. He’s clearly on to something.

It’s time to start the 17+ week roller coaster ride known as the National Football League so it means it’s also time for me to break out the greatest picks in the history of sports handicapping. I made people a lot of money last year if they looked at my choices and bet the opposite. This year the money is in the teams I actually pick to win. Or so I say now.

Picking games is always impossible but the first couple of weeks of the season are especially tough. A few teams are undervalued because they’re better than last year and some are overvalued because they suck this season but we don’t know it yet. I’d recommend playing it small until things become a little more clear.

My winners are in bold type.

Thursday
Minnesota Vikings +5 @ New Orleans Saints

Sunday
Carolina Panthers +6.5 @ New York Giants

Miami Dolphins -3 @ Buffalo Bills

Atlanta Falcons -2 @ Pittsburgh Steelers

Detroit Lions +6.5 @ Chicago Bears

Cincinnati Bengals +4.5 at New England Patriots

Cleveland Browns +3 @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Denver Broncos +2.5 @ Jacksonville Jaguars

Indianapolis Colts -2 @ Houston Texans

Oakland Raiders +6 @ Tennessee Titans

Green Bay Packers -3 @ Philadelphia Eagles

San Francisco 49ers -3 @ Seattle Seahawks

Arizona Cardinals -4 @ St. Louis Rams

Dallas Cowboys -3.5 @ Washington Redskins

Monday
Baltimore Ravens +2.5 @ New York Jets

San Diego Chargers -4.5 @ Kansas City Chiefs

I went 9-6 last week, raising my season record to 78-78-9. I’m .500 and my picks are pretty worthless. One thing I’ve noticed is that I don’t have two good weeks in a row, but I can string together some bad weeks. It doesn’t look good for my plays this week because A) Since I was caught up in the Packers/Cowboys hype I forgot to post my side for that game, and B) I liked Green Bay to cover the 7.

I don’t make plays on games involving the Philadelphia Eagles, and the home team is in bold type.

Carolina -3 over San Francisco: I know I’m going against the Panthers never covering at home, but they gotta beat the Niners by a touchdown at home. If they don’t the Panthers should be forced to forfeit the rest of their games.

Jacksonville +6.5 over Indianapolis: He’s probably 3rd or 4th on the list but Jack Del Rio has to be considered for coach of the year. The Jaguars aren’t the sexiest team to watch but they bring it week in and week out.

San Diego -5.5 over Kansas City: The Chiefs stomped the Chargers 30-16 in San Diego and now the Bolts will return the favor.

Miami -1 over NYJ: First off, I’d like to thank Ricky Williams for his cameo appearance in the 2007 NFL season, and I’d like to congratulate the Dolphins in advance for picking up their first win.. One question though.. What is it about the Miami Dolphins and crappy fields? The Phins’ games in London at Wembley Stadium, and in Pittsburgh Monday night both had fields that completely fell apart.

Detroit +4 over Minnesota: I like the Lions here even though they could get caught looking past the Vikes to the Cowboys next week.. A well rested Cowboys team.

Tampa Bay +3 over New Orleans: There’s a lot on the line in this game. The Bucs can all but lock up the NFC south with a victory, and the Saints can keep their playoff hopes alive if they win. The New Orleans defense will let them down again.

St. Louis -3 over Atlanta: No Bulger. Slight problem, but not enough for me to trust the Falcons on the road. The ATL has one road victory this season and that was over Carolina, which as we’ve mentioned a million times, sucks at home.

Tennessee -3.5 over Houston: Buy the half point down to 3, and then watch the Titans defense control the game.

Buffalo +5.5 over Washington

Cleveland +1 over Arizona: Talk about giving one away. The Cardinals are in the NFC playoff mix, but to go out and choke a game away to the San Francisco 49ers (at home) shows that Arizona is probably another year away.

Denver -3.5 over Oakland: We’re buying the half point again, and watching the the Raiders season swirl to an end. Oakland had lost 6 in a row before rising up against Kansas City last week, and now they’ll start a new losing streak.

NYG -1.5 over Chicago: I’m sure the Bears are hyped after their comeback <strike>cover</strike> victory last week. I had the Broncos and I still can’t believe they let a late 14 point lead get away. It looks like Plax won’t play so Eli will have to lean on Toomer and Shockey more than usual.

Pittsburgh -7 over Cincinnati: If the field in Pittsburgh is still that piece of crap donkey track on Sunday then scrap this pick all together.

New England -20 over Baltimore: I don’t know whether or not the Eagles laid a blueprint for defeating the Patriots, but I do know the Ravens aren’t good enough to beat New England even if they had blueprints, playbooks, and Belichick’s camera crew.

Â

It seems like my picks are getting worse by the week. That’s because they are. Well no more. I’m proclaiming an end to my rut. I will always pick my best in every game. It’s time for a change and it begins now. I went 4-6-2 last week bringing my ytd record to 38-37-9. Middle of the road.. But that’s all in the past because the are my best picks now.

I don’t take sides in any game involving the Philadelphia Eagles.. For the most part. If they were to make the playoffs, I would include the Eagles in my game predictions. Cleveland, Green Bay, San Diego, and Carolina have the bye week. The home team is in bold type.

Arizona +7 over Washington: It’s gonna be Kurt Warner with tape and a brace on his elbow, or Tim Rattay at qb for the Cardinals. It sounds like either way, it’s gonna end up being Rattay under center. I’m banking on the Redskins looking ahead to playing the Patriots next week.

New Orleans -9 over Atlanta: The Saints can’t be all the way back based on one game, but Atlanta’s struggling. Leftwich takes over Harrington… We’ll see.

Baltimore -3 over Buffalo: The fans in Buffalo are waiting for Willis McGahee. The Bills are coming off a bye week but I still think rookie qb Trent Edwards will be overmatched.

Minnesota +9.5 over Dallas: The Boys will come out with something to prove after getting handled by the Patriots. The Vikings are gonna have to use ball control to stay close in this game.

Miami +16 over New England: I’ve been taking the Patriots until further notice.. This weekend is further notice. I can’t bring myself to pass up 16 points for a NFL team at home. I don’t care who the two teams are. It’s gotta be tough for the Patriots to get it up for Cleo Lemon and the Fish after facing the Dallas Cowboys.

San Francisco +9.5 over NYG: Classic team off of a bye week vs. team that played on Monday night matchup. To tell the truth, I don’t know what the stats are in this situation… It seems like it should add up in favor of Frisco.

Tampa Bay +2 over Detroit: If you look at the stats, neither of these teams are impressive. Tampa’s 4-2 record and the Lions’ 3-2 record are what really matter. Tampa Bay needs the win to take over sole ownership of 1st place in the South, while Detroit is trying to gain ground on the idle Packers. Tampa wins the game.

Tennessee -1 over Houston: This is an if then pick. If Vince plays, I’m going with the Titans. Vince has to play the entire game for this pick to be valid..Yes, I’m hedging.

Oakland -3 over Kansas City: Yawwn..

Cincinnati -6 over NYJ: The Jets are terrible, the Bengals are terrible but Cincy will be less terrible on this day. If Marvin Lewis quits now, he still has time to get his name in the mix for the Yankees job.

Seattle -8.5 over St. Louis: This pick is all about the St. Louis Rams being the biggest disappointment on turf. How many experts picked them to make the playoffs? Hell if I know, but it was a lot.

Pittsburgh -3.5 over Denver: I have to take the Steelers here. Denver hasn’t played up to the level I was expecting from them this season.

Jacksonville +3 over Indianapolis: The Colts are undefeated no more. Jack Del Rio and his team are gonna pull off the upset on Monday Night Football.

Little did I know that Bill Parcells’ quarterbacking commandments would bring quite a bit of traffic to YBB.. If you stopped by for yesterday morning, and the site was down, thank Mr. Parcells. I have to say, there are either a lot of aspiring quarterbacks out there, or Bill Parcells is the E.F. Hutton of the NFL studio. Either way, everything’s running smoothly now..As far as last week, wow what a week it was. Dallas pulled out a miracle, Leinart’s season is over, the Steelers stomped the Seahawks, and the Colts and Patriots played like the elite teams that they are. As for me.. I was under .500 (5-8-1, 34-31-7 on the season), and now fun time’s over. It’s time to right this ship.Buffalo, Denver, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Detroit have the bye week. And, as always, I don’t pick for or against my beloved Philadelphia Eagles. The home team is in bold type.

Cincinnati -3 over Kansas City: Time for the Bengals to start their run to respectability. It won’t look like it at first, but the Chiefs will send their fans home disappointed.

Houston +6.5 over Jacksonville: Don’t ask me how the Jaguars do it but they win… And it’s usually ugly.. So the Jags win but they don’t cover.

Cleveland -4.5 over Miami: Trent Green got knocked out last week, and Joey Porter’s trashing Kellen Winslow jr… Doesn’t sound like a team headed in the right direction. Back to back road games will leave Miami drained in the second half.

Chicago -5 over Minnesota: The Bears pulled out the victory over the Pack last week, but I’m not willing to say that they’re back. They don’t have to be “back” to take down the Vikings. In a scheduling quirk, Minnesota is playing it’s 3rd of 4 road games in a row. They had a bye week last week to break up the monotony.

Baltimore -9.5 over St. Louis: The Rams are 0-5 and have lost their 2 road games this season by a combined score of 59-10. Even the unimpressive Ravens should beat them by 2 touchdowns.

Tennessee +3 over Tampa Bay: This is an interesting game. Both of these times are fighting for respect, and a victory over the other would go along ways to establishing some. Both teams stomped the Saints, and lost to the Colts.. If I had to pick a game that was most likely to push, it would be this one.

Green Bay -3 over Washington: The Redskins have been a nice story for the first quarter of the season. Jason Campbell’s played well, and the defense is quietly shutting people down. I still like the Packers this weekend. Under 40.5 anyone?

Arizona -4.5 over Carolina: If David Carr can’t go, the Panthers are gonna start 43 year old Vinny Testaverde. Carolina is 3-0 on the road, but that was before they ran into Kurt Warner.

New England -4.5 over Dallas: This game features great names and matchups. Brady vs. Romo, T.O. vs. Moss, the Patriots D vs. the Cowboys D. Bill Belichick vs. Wade Phillips. Wait. What? Yeah, I’m rollin’ with New England.

Oakland +10 over San Diego: I feel like I’m taking a chance here. Not because it’s the big bad Chargers against the lowly Raiders, but because Oak-town might be without Warren Sapp and Derrick Burgess.

Seattle -6.5 over New Orleans: The Saints are bad this year. I know, that’s a major news flash. But what I’m saying is, it’s time for me to quit holding out hope that they’ll get it turned around… Especially up in the Pacific Northwest.

NYG -3 over Atlanta: This is gonna be the Monday Night game? This is a joke… Funny how this season can not escape Michael Vick.
