New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes stopped by the ESPN offices to teach Karl Ravech the Merengue under the guise of filming a commercial. What really happened is Rico Ravey paid Reyes to teach him the dance steps so Karl can try to hook-up with somebody in the Deportes division. I like how John Anderson’s in the back soaking up game.

The song Reyes and Ravech are dancing to is Una Mirada by Omega. Here’s a video of Omega performing the song at what looks like a Dominican version of MTV’s Spring Break. There’s a mild NSFW disclaimer.

The New York Mets are off to a disappointing 6-6 start, and Pedro’s been shelved but it’s not all bad news for the Metropolitans. They have great fans and the only big league third baseman in The Big Apple that half the country doesn’t think is a douchebag.

David Wright was on Letterman Monday night to discuss his 100th home run, Mets vs. Phillies, the team’s slow start, and the reason for lengthy baseball games. From the 2:15 mark:

DL: When I was a kid, we’d go to a ball game it’d be two hours fifteen minutes, two hours and twenty minutes, you’d be home and everything would be fine. And now you guys are playing four hour games regularly. Does that take a toll on you? Do you mind playing a long game like that?

DW: You know, Guys gotta do different things. We got guys that pimp their home runs, we got guys that fist pump after strikeouts. The games a little longer, a little more interesting. It’s good, it’s good. You have a little bit more time in between innings, commercial breaks here and there. A little longer games, a little later bedtimes.

After a brief discussion in between, David Letterman goes back to pimping home runs.

DL: You’re saying that baseball games are longer now because guys are pimping their home runs?

DW: It’s more of a show than it used to be. It used to be just substance, now it’s style.

DL: What does that mean ‘they’re pimping their home runs’?

DW: A few different things. You got guys that’ll flip the bat and guys that do this and that. You know, it’s part of the game now.

DL: Did you do any pimping yesterday?

DW: Usually when I hit ‘em, I don’t know that they’re going out so I can’t pimp it until I know they go out.

DL: So you gotta wait til later. Til you’ve seen the replay.

I hope A-Rod was watching this interview. He could see how a little personality can go a long way, and he would realize that he doesn’t have to embarrass himself to be on Letterman.

The Detroit Tigers’ Dontrelle Willis prepares for life after baseball by interviewing Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies and David Wright of the New York Mets. The question that Willis wants answered to most is “Who’s the toughest pitcher you’ve faced?” and he’s begging for the answer to be him. Ryan Howard took the diplomatic way out by saying the D-Train is one of the best pitchers in the game but David Wright didn’t hold back.

Dontrelle: Who’s one of the toughest pitchers you’ve faced in the league man and why?

David: I would say you but I own you.

Classic. For the record Wright is 14-39 (.359) with 1 hr and 8 rbi against Willis. Dontrelle cracked back by saying it’s gonna be Tigers-Phillies in the World Series, but it was too late. Wright got him again.

JS: Alex Rodriguez opted out of his Yankees contract, he’s a third baseman, they say ‘maybe the Mets will go after him’.. You’re the Mets third baseman.. Do you call them up and go “heeellooooo”?

DW: You know, just seeing the way that Boston celebrated, seeing the winners of World Series, first and foremost I wanna win, so am I saying that I would change positions for a guy like Alex Rodriguez? If the front office called me and said ‘hey look, we wanna make this team better and you’re involved’, I would absolutely wanna sit down and listen, but for right now I am the third baseman of the New York Mets, and I’m going into the 2008 season prepared to be third baseman of the Mets.

JS: What if they call you and they say ‘hey what about Jon Stewart maybe playing third base?’?

DW: I’m all in.

JS: You’re all in for that?.?

DW: I’m all in.

JS: I say no A-Rod and I’ll tell you why. He seems like bad medicine. He seems like a very good player, but when he gets on the team, it’s like he weakens the team. He’s like the Dick Cheney of baseball… In that he… nobody seems to like what he’s doing.. And by the way you don’t have to comment on that.

DW: (Laughing) Does he watch the show?

JS: No. He definitely doesn’t… But no, it seems like he’s a bad chemistry guy, and chemistry’s important, is it not?

DW: 52 home runs are important too, last time I checked.

JS: That could be a lot of chemistry, ok, I see what you’re saying.

I never thought of Alex Rodriguez as the Dick Cheney of baseball. He’s not even the dick of baseball as long as Barry’s still playing… If I compared A-Rod to a politician, I would go with Al Gore. They’re both rich, they put up statistics that you can’t ignore, and neither has reached their ultimate goal. I could keep going with the similarities, but I wanted to bring up the only difference I found. Alex likes the she-male, muscular type of stripper, Al Gore does not. Or does he?..

The Mets got it made… They can pull of one of the greatest tank jobs in history, but have it covered up by the Yankees.. And they got women dancing and singing for them. Unfortunately, all of the tail in Queens couldn’t have helped the NYMs this year.. Or maybe that was the problem.

Michigan’s loss, at home, to Appalachian State is obviously the story of the week, and possibly the story of the year in college football. I had no rooting interest in the game, but I couldn’t help pulling for ASU. I’m sure they’re still screaming “We Beat Michigan“.

Joining Michigan in the hanging it up for the season category are Tennessee and Florida State. I didn’t have either squad challenging for the national title, and the 0-1 starts kill any hopes they had… But at least FSU lost AT Clemson and the Vols lost AT Cal.

Maybe this chick is a good luck charm for the Mets. The NYMs swept Atlanta, and then they welcomed Pedro Martinez back to the the team. Martinez picked up his 3000th strikeout and his first win of the season during his 5 inning outing on Monday.

The NL Central and West are the home to the only divisional races. The Cubs lead the Brewers by a game and a half and the Cardinals by two games. Chi-town will hold on to win the division, even if they can’t get Zambrano going. San Diego leads the west by a game over Arizona, and I’m taking the leader again. As a matter of fact, I’m taking all the leaders across the board… The divisions, the wildcards, everything. The playoffs are set in my book.

GOLF

I didn’t think it was possible, but the FedEx Cup is kinda interesting. Phil Mickelson balled (Are golfers ballers?) and held off Tiger Woods to win the Deutsche Bank Championship. The victory moved Phil back to the #2 spot in the world rankings and #1 overall in the PGA playoffs. I’m glad to see somebody trying to hang with Mr. Woods, but if Phil skips next week’s event in Chicago, the FedEx Cup is back to being a joke.

What does any guy want after a hard day week at the office? A random You Tube chick singing about them of course. Unfortunately for the New York Mets, I don’t know if this song will be enough. The Phillies just completed a sweep of the Mets, trimming the division lead to 2, and now New York stumbles into Atlanta. The Braves have owned the Mets this season, leading the season series 8-4. Willie Randolph better get his troops out of this funk or the next chick on You Tube will weigh 450.

Ahh the Cabbage Patch Kids.. I remember my sister whined for one and when she got it, she lost the damn thing. When I look back, it’s possible that she sold it since people were goin’ apeshit over those dolls.

The fathers in those commercials have to be so ashamed of their sons. Dad wants to get out to the yard, teach his son how to score a game, and if they’re lucky, they’ll catch a foul ball. Son wants to stay home and he’ll only leave the house if he can bring Barbi and her corvette.
