Kenny Smith will turn 44 on Sunday, but Charles Barkley, Ernie Johnson, and the TNT crew got the party started Thursday night. First, they clowned The Jet with a tiny Carolina cake while breaking out a nice-sized Michigan cake for Chris Webber who wasn’t even there. Then they gave Kenny the gift any Tarheel would want.. A Duke Blue Devils jersey.

I’m a N.C. State fan and the only thing that could make this video better is Kenny Smith slipping and falling while stomping Duke out. It’s a little short of LenDale White stomping the Steelers’ terrible towel, and way behind Pete Rosenberg’s “This is why Duke sucks“, but I know the residents of Krzyzewskiville are hurt.

The NBA on TNT crew decided to celebrate the birth of Kenny Smith’s son with a diaper changing contest between The Jet and Charles Barkley. The Baby Ruth surprise in Barkley’s baby’s diaper is nasty and hilarious… Reminding us why Sir Charles once said:

“Every time I think about changing a diaper, I run a little bit harder and a little bit faster to make sure I can afford a nanny until my daughter’s old enough to take care of that herself.”

Good thinkin’ Chuck. Cuz you look like you’re terrible at taking care of that. Props to whoever at TNT that’s been keeping up on their Caddyshack.

Frank Caliendo joined Charles, Kenny, and EJ on the TNT NBA post game show Thursday, to do some imitations, and he apparently has a new show that’s gonna air on TBS but it’s not getting a lot of promotion. Caliendo’s Chuckster is pretty damn good, and he’s always entertaining when he changes characters rapidly. As for Frank TV, if House of Payne is a hit for TBS, Caliendo should be able to pull his weight.

NBA Advertising Is Fantastic

If you only take one positive from the NBA playoffs this year it should be that advertising works. I don’t have the ratings from the latest airing of TBS’ “House of Payne”, but episode 1 did incredibly well and the 2nd episode was basic cable’s #1 sitcom telecast of all time. OF ALL TIME. In fairness, I have never seen the show, and I have nothing against anybody that has anything to do with the program BUT.. Are you serious? “House of Payne”?!? Did all of those spots during TNT’s NBA broadcast drive the nation to watch that show? Was there a drawing for $500 million bucks during the middle of the broadcast?

I won’t judge a book by it’s cover but I’ll judge a tv show by it’s commercials. To put it nicely, the commercials sucked. I thought they were supposed to highlight the good parts of a show with commercials. HOP ads made me cringe. The commercials made me set a tivo reminder not to watch TBS the entire day that the show airs… And I don’t care what the hell the rest of you are watching, I won’t be tuning in for “House of Payne”.. I’ll stop short of saying I’ll never watch because the show’s creator Tyler Perry got TBS to sign up for 100 episodes… There is a God. And he loves him some Tyler Perry.

Need more proof that the power of positive thinking is helping the Houston Rockets? Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller and guard Derek Fisher have traded words through the media, resulting in Miller meeting with the team for 30 minutes after Wednesday’s shootaround. The Rockets first round opponent has some in house fighting going on.. That’s gotta be a good thing. 

Forget for a minute that Larry Miller’s original comments came after a game Sunday, and I didn’t start supporting Houston until yesterday. I’m gonna need you to ignore the part of the story that states both parties have said everything is ok now. Let’s focus on some of the things Derek Fisher had to say after Miller ripped the team.

” … what it’s not time for is peripheral people to have comments about what’s going on in our locker room and questioning who we are as a team. And I don’t really care who that is.”

Well said Mr. Fisher.

Derek admits that he had been biting his tongue for some time:

“He made a statement, and I made a statement in response to not only his statement but just overall. It was something I probably wanted to say overall but just held onto it. It was something I just feel is important, and I want everybody to hear that, not just to him, just to Coach (Jerry Sloan) or to the fellas. It was to everybody. That’s important to me.”

Like I said earlier, Miller and Fisher have said everything’s good between them but I don’t believe it. “The Secret” is conspiring to guide the Houston Rockets to the championship by any means necessary. I’m not hoping that any of the Utah Jazz get arrested.. Off court problems are weclome though…

A couple of former Rockets must not know what being positive means or they don’t read my blog. TNT’s Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley might be using the tough love tactic.. It’s just that they sound like they’re being negative.

Chuck and Jet, you guys have the opportunity to inform millions of people about the Rockets trek toward the title. Use your platform to spread the love, don’t start shoveling the dirt. If the Rocket’s and their fans can’t have the support of two of their own, doesn’t that mean that the terrorist Utah Jazz have won?

***The Houston Rockets are a proud franchise. Stop telling me the only reason they won a couple of titles in the 90s is because MJ was playing baseball. I have to go with the history books..The Rockets were absolutely, POSITIVELY, back to back champions in ’94 and ’95. Woulda coulda shoulda whatever.***
