O.J. Simpson goes on trial for kidnapping and armed robbery today in Las Vegas, so he had a run-in with the law on Sunday to get him warmed up for court. Simpson was driving on I-15 in Vegas when he was pulled over by the Nevada Highway Patrol. At first I thought O.J. was trying to flee the state but it turns out somebody reported him for drunken driving.

From the Las Vegas Review Journal:

Simpson, whom NHP officials said was not intoxicated, was not cited or arrested. He was pulled over somewhere between Jean and Las Vegas while he was traveling north on I-15, NHP Trooper Kevin Honea said.

“The guy was just driving. He did absolutely nothing wrong,” Honea said. “We owe it to the safety of the public to check these things out.”

O.J. Simpson was involved with the police and cleared of any wrongdoing? There’s a first time for everything. He’s not gonna be as lucky during the trial.

Venus and Serena Williams are caught up in some sort of contractual legal mess about somebody signing or not signing some documents. All I can tell from the video is that Richard Williams was trying to channel his inner John McEnroe, and he was taught to tell the truth. The judge, who stays aggy, was on the verge of throwing R-Dub in the clink. My favorite part of the video took place right after Mr. Williams banged on the judge’s desk:

Judge: Mr. Williams, please don’t put me in an awkward circumstance.
RW: Don’t put me in one either.

That was about the time the court deputy started to move towards Richard Williams.. I thought it was about to go down.. Luckily for pops, Serena was there to save him from a contempt of court charge at the minimum, and a court ordered videotaped beatdown in the worst case scenario.

In an edition of Free Throws earlier this week, I had a story about Joe Frazier taking his daughter to court. In his suit he alleged:

His daughter, who is a candidate for a municipal court judge seat in Philadelphia, breached her ethical duty to her father by not making available business and legal records related to the years she advised him.

Smoking Joe has had a change of heart… Deciding to drop the case against Jacquelyn Frazier-Lyde. According to Frazier-Lyde:

“I talked to my father today and he asked me how I was doing and I told him that I loved him.”

Allow me to translate: I called my dad today and begged him to chill out on the lawsuit. I’m running for a seat on the city of Philadelphia’s Municipal Court in the May 15th Democratic Primary and the last thing I need is my dad making me look bad and screwing up my opportunity.

Frazier’s lawyer reluctantly dropped the lawsuit for his client, but has said he will refile if Ms. Frazier-Lyde doesn’t come up with the papers in question. Smoking Joe’s lawyer Michael P. Kelly:

“This is about a father’s love for his daughter. We’re giving her a chance to live up to her word. If we’re not fully satisfied, I’ll be right back, quicker than a Joe Frazier left hook.”

I’m guessing they’ll refile on May 16th.
