Interview: Extra Mustard’s Jimmy Traina

“I don’t blog but I have the mentality of a blogger.“ Jimmy Traina gets bombarded with emails on a daily basis, all from bloggers hoping to get linked on Sports Illustrated’s Hot Clicks. When he’s not trimming down the list, the native New Yorker is hanging out with Erin Andrews and fulfilling lifelong fantasies like chilling with the Yankees. I spoke to Jimmy on Friday as he was waiting to go to a Billy Joel concert. The conversation is after the jump.HG: How did you become a sports fan and what are some of your early sports memories?

JT: It all really started with the Yankees. My uncles are huge Yankee fans, everyone in my family, it’s a Yankee family. I remember a little bit of the ‘81 World Series with Dave Winfield stinking up the joint. I remember the ‘80 World Series Phillies-Royals. I think my first baseball memory is that World Series, when Bob Boone bobbled a pop-up in foul territory and Pete Rose caught it. So it started with the Yankees, but I watched football and basketball too as a kid. As I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten into football more than anything. I follow the Yankees, Jets, and Knicks. One outta three ain’t bad.

HG: You work for Sports Illustrated but it’s online. Do you consider yourself an extension of the magazine?

JT: I think of the magazine and the web as two different entities. You just can’t do the same things. I think they have two different audiences, and I’m not smart enough to figure out how you make them one audience, that would be really good for me if I could figure that out, but online is this world that I don’t know if anyone was prepared for. It’s almost like online was made for sports with the scores, the stats, the news. And obviously the magazine doesn’t do stats and scores so they’ll just be two different entities.

HG: At last count there were a gazillion sports websites. How much is too much, will sports reach a limit on the net?

JT: Like I said before sports and the internet are the perfect marriage so it’s only gonna get bigger. We have a couple of guys here in the office and we can’t even imagine how we did fantasy before the internet. Everything’s gonna expand and get bigger. What’s good is, what’s good for bloggers like you and the quote mainstream sites is that the real sports fans want different outlets. I know for me, I like to go on Si.com and read a Tom Verducci column but I also wanna go on the blogs and see what’s going on. The web has something for everyone and I think for real sports fans, they’re the ones that get a bonus because there are so many things for them to read and check out and experience, and it’s just gonna keep growing.

HG: The highlight of your career has to be meeting Erin Andrews right? You two hang out, what’s that been like?

JT: It’s been fun. It came about in a natural way. It really started on her end because I was doing Hot Clicks one day and surfing the web as I do in the morning and I saw a link to a story on One More Dying Quail. They interviewed her and asked her what sites that she read and she said that she loved Extra Mustard. The people in the blogs know me for Hot Clicks but I run that whole Extra Mustard page. So she says she loves Extra Mustard, and after that I wrote something on Hot Clicks like “We love Erin Andrews and Erin Andrews loves us“. That day I actually got an email from her, and after that I did a Q&A with her, we sorta just kept up through email. Sometimes you wanna discuss things in email that are better said over the phone than email so we’ve done phone calls and emails. And she’s great. I don’t wanna come off as just a psycho fan but she’s been great.

HG: Do your friends stalk Erin through you? Like “hey, call Erin Andrews, let’s see what she’s up to?”

JT: Believe me it’s been done. I have her cellphone number in my cellphone and my friends will say “text Erin”.

HG: How many stories get sent to you on a daily basis for you to review for Hot Clicks?

JT: It’s pretty out of control right now to be honest with you. It was a slow build but now it’s pretty overwhelming. I feel bad because I wanna respond to people, I wanna link things, but I just don’t have the time. Once Hot Clicks is posted at about 10:30 in the morning I have to start doing other things. So on a daily basis I get sent around 100 stories or links. I get a lot of stuff and I have to whittle it down. It’s tough but there are tougher jobs out there.

HG: What audience are you trying to reach with the links on Hot Clicks?

JT: What I’m finding is..I’m serving two different audiences. Obviously I’m serving the blog audience and the bloggers. Who are tremendous. They’re huge and I wouldn’t be able to do Hot Clicks without them. I’m also serving this audience that comes to us from CNN.com. They might not really care about blogs, but they want interesting stuff, funny stuff. I might get something sent to me from a blogger that’s sort of “inside bloggish”. Like the Will Leitch/Buzz Bissinger thing. Outside of the blogs that’s not really a story. So I’m serving two audiences, yes I’m serving the sports fan, but there are things that the bloggers are into that I don’t think the average sports fans are into so I gotta try to go with the stuff that’s gonna appeal to both audiences.

HG: How do you determine or what determines if a story is qualified for Hot Clicks?

JT: You have to know what’s gonna fly and not gonna fly. I know in the back of my head what I won’t link to or can’t link to. Most blogs out there, for the most part, are linkable. There’s only a couple of topics that I think it’s best to stay away from just because we have advertisers, we have readers that we don’t want to piss off. I don’t think it’s rocket science to figure out what’s gonna fly what’s not gonna fly. You gotta use judgment, but I like to push the envelope, which I think you have to do. You don’t wanna be boring, that’s the worst possible thing you can be. You gotta be careful, but you still gotta try to push the envelope a little bit.

HG: Do you have a soft spot for any subjects, things that are guaranteed to get a blogger a link?

JT: This is the question I get asked the most and I always give a crappy answer and I feel bad. I can’t say that it’s one thing but I can give you multiple things. At the end of the day if it’s something unique, something original, if it’s something that stands out and it’s not on 1000 blogs already, that’s a good place to start. There’s two sites I’ve been linking to a lot lately Tirico Suave and this one site, I still don’t know how to say it’s name Flatusyahu or something. They do some unbelievable photoshopped stuff. Good photoshops are great, that’s great stuff for Hot Clicks. We do a lot of lists because people who are reading Hot Clicks at work, they come on ten minutes, or they’re killing a half hour while they’re eating lunch so they can read a list because it’s a quick hitting thing… I can tell you what not to send me. I really feel bad about this but somebody will send me a link to something, it’s really good writing, really in-depth reporting, and it’s a 800 word story that’s an analysis of something.. that’s not gonna get on Hot Clicks. We already have that on the site. Somebody sending me why the AL East will win the World Series this year is just not for us. I still get stuff like that sent to me and I feel bad because these people put so much work into it but it’s just not a fit and that usually gets left on the cutting room floor. If I see the word steroids, 99 percent of the time I will not read it. I just could not care less. We get a decent amount of traffic from CNN.com so anything that’s borderline, like the Brady Quinn picture on the gay website, it’s not worth it for me to go there.

HG: Have you been enjoying the perks that come with working at SI?

JT: A little bit, not a ton. I interviewed Derek Jeter two weeks ago which is pretty much the highlight of my life. I don’t think I had a chance of doing a good interview with him because I was blown away by just doing the interview with him. It’s been good though. I’ve interviewed Alyssa Milano, Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights, Jeter, Joba Chamberlain so it’s been cool. It hasn’t been an overwhelming amount of perks so I can use more perks. More perks!! Actually a company sent me something and I meant to post this on Hot Clicks, but I got some disposable flasks. That’s a cool perk.

HG: What would you fill the flask with?

JT: Probably some vodka and Seven-up.

HG: What brand of vodka?

JT: I’m not one of those people that can tell the difference. Absolute, Kettle One, Grey Goose, it’s all the same to me.

HG: Do you get emails complaining about the subject matter on Hot Clicks? I mean from players or teams that mistakenly think you’ve written something that you’re only linking to..

JT: I don’t think there are any teams or athletes that know my name. I’m not that important. Here’s something though. A lot of times I get emails from readers, not necessarily bloggers but readers who get very mad because sometimes the videos don’t work in Hot Clicks. All you have to do is refresh the page two or three times and the video will work. You don’t have to call me an asshole or an idiot or say ‘what’s the point in linking to these if they don’t work’. They actually work, it’s a You Tube glitch, not a Hot Clicks glitch. You just need to refresh the page two or three times.

HG: Speaking of glitches.. You’ve crashed my site a few times with the Hot Clicks traffic. Is this something you take pride in? Knowing you can bring down a website with a link..

JT: Yeah we’ve gotten that many times. That’s something I can’t really control. What’s funny is, the guy who sits next to me at work, Gennaro Filice, he calls getting linked at Hot Clicks “The gift and the curse“. Obviously the gift is the traffic and the curse is we’ve crashed some sites. So whenever a site gets crashed he does a routine about the gift and the curse and we get a little chuckle out of it. We’ve probably crashed 10-15 sites. The only time it’s really a problem for me is if it’s the lead item in Hot Clicks and the site gets crashed. We usually have a very attractive female up there and that’s what people wanna see and they click the link and the site doesn’t work and I start getting those angry emails again.

HG: You don’t have comments on Hot Clicks.. You could open up the comments and let people speak to you that way instead of by email.

JT: I have to say this and I know this is blasphemous in the blog world and I’ll probably get ripped for this but I don’t get the whole comments thing myself. Maybe I shouldn’t say don’t get, I never read them. I guess because I’m moving so quick from blog to blog but I’m not a big fan or reader of the comments. What I like about not having comments in Hot Clicks is that if somebody actually emails me a criticism or praise, I know they mean it a little more. They’ve put their name to it and email address. I have no problem with criticisms but I’d rather the criticism comes from somebody that has an email address, sends me something, I can send something back to them instead of some guy in the comments named davidsternblows.

HG: We’ve talked about the good that comes with working for Sports Illustrated, Extra Mustard, there has to be some bad too.

JT: If you ask me what’s the one thing I dislike the most about Hot Clicks it’s that I can’t curse in them when I write them. I’d love to be able to say, well I better not say it, but for instance, if somebody falls down I don’t know anyone, any co-worker, any friend, any one in my family that would say “he fell on his butt”. Everyone would say he fell on his ass. I can’t do that.. And you guys use so many pictures that I can’t use just because of copyright issues. At SI, we have lawyers and they follow all laws. So for instance if there’s a picture of Kyle Orton with a Jack Daniel’s bottle or Matt Leinart in the hot tub, I can’t use those. Which is why I think Hot Clicks is really cool because I can link to the sites that use those pictures but I can’t use them. I get very jealous of the bloggers for that, I would like to use some of those pictures but I can’t get Time Inc. sued.

A Visit To The ESPN The Mag ESPY Style Studio

ESPN and a bunch of athletes and celebrities were in Los Angeles this week for the taping of the ESPY awards. I got a chance to spend a couple of days at the ESPY Style Studio to take in the scene and speak to some players.

There was all kinds of loot for the ESPY participants to pickup including Skull Candy headphones, Karl Lagerfeld sunglasses, Redpepper jeans, and Kefir, which is the health drink of choice for a lot of jocks.

It was a good trip overall, and after the jump I interview a Heisman trophy winner, a couple of NBA champions, and a guy that’s not a big fan of sports blogs.

Sam Cassell gave me a few minutes of his time even though he hasn’t had the best experiences doing interviews with random people.

HG: Sam, thanks for the time.

SC: No problem.

HG: You’re in LA for the ESPYs, I saw some video of you chilling with Manny Pacquiao in Vegas, it seems like you’re enjoying your third ring.

SC: That’s what you’re supposed to do after you win a championship. You gotta live it up and enjoy it so that’s what I’m trying to do.

HG: You bounced from the Clippers and landed on a championship team. Now you see Elton Brand leaving. You think he was influenced by you or is it something about that organization that’s driving players away?

SC: (laughs for a few seconds).. I’ll say I’m not surprised to see Elton leave. But to tell the truth nothing surprises me. It’s a business. You gotta remember that. It’s a business first and it has it’s ups and downs.

HG: Ok Sam, last question. You were rumored to be judging a (pole dancing) competition over the weekend. Did that go down?

SC: (half-hearted laugh) I didn’t do that man c’mon. I’m gonna be a head coach soon so I can’t do something like that.

HG: Thanks Sam.

SC: All right.

Antonio Pierce of the NFL champion New York Giants was in the house but he wasn’t sporting his ring. R.W. McQuarters had his and left me blinded by the bling.

R.W. wasn’t in a very talkative mood, but AP picked up the slack for his teammate.

HG: What up Super Bowl champ?

AP: I’m good. I’m good.

HG: You won the Super Bowl you gotta be good. How much have things changed for you since winning the big game?

AP: There’s nothing like being an NFL champion. I’ve gotten so many words of respect, so many compliments from other players. It’s great. Guys are really happy for me.

HG: I saw you talking to TO. Did you rub the fact that you have a ring in his face?

AP: haha, no. TO’s a good guy and a good friend. He’s a competitor. I’ve said a few little things to different people but I’m not rubbing it in anyone’s face.

HG: I know it felt great to knock off the undefeated Patriots and get a ring, but did you feel a little something extra for Eli Manning considering all of the criticism he’s gone through in his short career?

AP: Eli has the thickest skin. People were down on him but we never gave up on him. He’s a Manning so there’s all those expectations and he’s lived up to them. He’s turned into not only a great player but a leader too. Through everything he always kept his composure.

At this time NY Giants tight end Kevin Boss walks over to us. Pierce and Boss talk about dinner plans. As Kevin Boss is leaving I ask him since he’s up here (at the Style Studio) does that mean Jeremy Shockey has to sit down stairs? He laughed a little and then Antonio Pierce added his own joke.. Too bad I can’t say what it was.

HG: Last year at the beginning of all of the Michael Vick drama, you had a quote….

AP: Anybody that fights dogs is a punk.

HG: Yeah that’s the one. I wrote about it at the time, but I want to ask, were you speaking directly to Michael Vick when you said that?

AP: I said it in response to what was going on but it wasn’t directed only at Michael Vick. Anybody that’s fighting dogs is a punk.

HG: You raise pitbulls so I know this is an issue that hits home for you.

AP: Yeah man, and people have gotten on me about my dogs, but I’m not doing anything like dogfighting. Think about, what if somebody got thrown in the ring with one of those MMA guys and was forced to fight? It’s the same thing for dogs, and you just don’t treat dogs like that.

HG: Ok one last question.. Tiki Barber retires and then you guys win the Super Bowl. Any relation there?

AP: Who? Who? There’s your relation right there.

HG: Thanks AP.

AP: Cool man.

The Boston Celtics were all over the place. I talked to Ray Allen for a few seconds, and then to P.J. Brown for a few minutes.

HG: First of all, lemme say congrats. I know the championship was a long time coming. How does it feel?

PJB: I’m still trying to get used to it. After we won, I woke up the next morning and just stared at the ceiling. It’s a great feeling.

HG: Before the finals started the Lakers were everybody’s pick. What did you guys say as a team about that?

PJB: We didn’t listen to the critics or the experts. The experts were wrong so it didn’t matter.

HG: What’s the best thing about being an NBA champion?

PJB: So far all of the love and support. A lot of people are coming up to me and saying congratulations. It’s all been great. And something else that’s happened is I’ve developed a new respect for all of the players in the league. It’s so hard to win the championship and most guys never will, but everybody’s working so hard trying to accomplish that goal. You have to respect guys working that hard.

HG: So are you coming back to try and win another one?

PJB: Im 50-50 right now. It was hard to win one. Who knows if I would win another one? But right now I’m undecided.

Braylon Edwards of the Cleveland Browns stopped and talked with me even though he’s not a fan of sports blogs. That was the only thing he wanted to talk about.

HG: What’s up Braylon? I saw you on HBO during the townhall meeting on sports media. Things got ugly there but was there anything you wanted to say that you didn’t say that night?

BE: Not really. I wish the sports blogs would stick to sports. Bloggers can be good but they try to get to personal and I don’t like that.

HG: So what were you thinking when Buzz Bissinger started going off on Will Leitch?

BE: I wanted to be on Buzz’ side but he went to far. He was saying the right things but the wrong way. He went AWOL.

HG: So is it the pictures, the writing, or what that bothers you?

BE: It depends. If it’s too personal it bothers me. I was just talking to Matt Leinart (gesturing towards Matt Leinart). Matt was having a private party at his house and then the pics are on the internet. Same with VY, Vince Young. He was at a club but it’s his birthday. He’s allowed to go out. He was holding a bottle of alcohol.. So what? He’s over the age to do that. It probably got hot so he took off his shirt, I don’t know, but those pictures shouldn’t be all over the internet. I wanna see the blogs writing good stuff, nothing inappropriate. Keep it sports.

HG: Well, Matt’s pictures were posted by somebody at the party so he needs to take care of that. Hopefully you don’t end up in any compromising pics on the net.

BE: Not me. And even if there are some pictures I’m gonna say it’s my twin.

HG: Thanks Braylon.

BE: All right man.

Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow was torturing himself at the ESPY Style Suites. NCAA rules prevent him from picking up any freebies, so he could look but not touch. He should’ve brought his dad to cover for him like Stephon Curry did.

Since he had free time on his hands Tim Tebow decided to answer a few questions from me.

HG: You were part of a national championship winning team your freshman year, you followed that up with the Heisman, what are your goals for this season?

TT: As a team we’re looking to win the SEC championship. You win the SEC championship and you’re probably gonna be playing for the national championship so that’s our focus..But it’s gonna be hard. The SEC is tough and even one of the lower teams can rise up and beat you.

HG: I know your partial but from all of the football you’ve seen is the SEC the best conference?

TT: There’s a lot of good teams in other conferences. The Big East, ACC, Pac-10, Big Ten, they all have good teams and any of them could send somebody to the national championship.

HG: You still respect the Big Ten after their championship performances the last couple of years?

TT: Oh yeah, you have to. The thing is the Big Ten doesn’t get to play against the SEC style very often so it’s hard for them. It’s hard for us too because their style is different. So when the SEC and Big Ten are matched up both teams are trying to adapt to the differences.

HG: Last year June Jones was trying to knock your game in support of his quarterback Colt Brennan. Saying you’re a system quarterback. I liked your response when you said “what quarterback doesn’t play in a system?” or something like that.

TT: Yeah I think I said that.

HG: You did.

TT: It’s true though. Even in the NFL, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, they play in a system. They’ve mastered the systems they play in, but it’s still a system. Every quarterback plays in some sort of system so I just try to play the best I can in our offense.

HG: You’re the Heisman trophy winning quarterback for Florida. Have you noticed an increase in the quality of women you’re pulling?

TT: (Laughing) Well, it’s Florida, they love football, so people have been around me since I declared for Florida. Everywhere I go, it’s “Go Gators”. Gators are everywhere. I get more congratulations than ladies coming up to me. Actually I get men and women congratulating me.

HG: What does a big time college quarterback do in his free time? Mess around in the dorms?

TT: I try to relax whenever I have downtime. I also think it’s important to try to help the less fortunate.

HG: Yes, I’ve read about your missions and your work with ministry. If you weren’t going to the NFL is ministry what you would do instead?

TT: Whether I’m in the NFL or not I want to do ministry. I want to help kids and other people. It’s something that I really enjoy.

HG: Thanks Tim. Good luck in the future.

TT: Thank you sir.

The Ghost, Kelly Pavlik, was in the house and you couldn’t find a more normal high-profile athlete. He looks and talks like somebody you would find at a normal job, not like a guy that will put you on your pockets.

HG: Thanks for the time champ.

KP: Yeah, thank you.

HG: Let’s go back to the first Jermaine Taylor fight. You’re down in the second round, and it looked like you were in trouble. You got off the floor to eventually knock out Taylor. What were you thinking when you got knocked down?

KP: I was just thinking I’ve waited too long for this. I want this too much. I can’t let it get away. I knew if I could survive that moment, I would get my chance. He would make a mistake and I would capitalize.

HG: One of the keys to your style is that you throw a lot of straight hard punches. How do you keep up that work rate for an entire fight?

KP: I want to be mentioned with the great fighters so I have to stay dedicated. I’m talking about training 8-9 hours. Sacrificing. Sometimes guys get money and they don’t work as hard. I’ve made some money, I’m living comfortable, but I’m not done, I’m still dedicated. I’ve only had one title defense. I want to do more. If I show up out of shape I can get hurt. Plus I have my family and I’m fighting for them too.

HG: Recently there was some news about threats being made against you, but the police have closed the investigation for the moment. Is everything ok there?

KP: Yeah.. That situation involved a former manager. He’s run into some bad times and I guess that’s what led to his comments. I reported it because I have a family, my daughter and my fiancee, so I have to look out for them. You know, I’m out of town a lot and if I came home and my house had been broken into, I wanted people to know who was responsible or how this happened.

HG: Ok cool. Last question. You look around and see some more famous athletes, but do you take pride in the fact that you could knock 95% of them out?

KP: (laughing) I don’t look at it like that, but it’s always good to know.

I DON’T CARE ABOUT WINNING

I was checking out the Black Blog Awards website when I noticed the damnedest thing… Under the heading for Best Sports/Recreation Blog there are 3 names and yes, you guessed it… I’m not one of them.

The three finalist are The Starting Five, The Sideline Show Sportstalk Radio, and Sportz-N-Album Cutz. The Starting Five gets my vote because not only have I never heard of the other two sites, it is the most solid BOO sports blog that you’ll find. The Five get good interviews, go in-depth with their topics, and they have a solid group of commenters that go left, right, and often straight to the heart of a story. The site has biases but they don’t hide them, and even though it seems like they’re always about race, they’re actually reppin’ for equality.

With that said, NO, I don’t feel snubbed by the committee. Nope. Not at all. I mean, if I did feel that they overlooked some of post I did about Jason Whitlock or Kobe Bryant, I wouldn’t say anything about it. Why would I? It would read like I was whining. And I wouldn’t do that. I don’t care enough. If I cared I would dedicate at least a paragraph to the humorous videos and NBA player/lesbian bar story that I wrote about. Plus, who the hell am I to feel dissed?
