Beer Pong or Beirut or whatever the kids are calling it these days has surged into the lead as America’s top drinking game. There’s a Beer Pong Movie, two different Beer Pong games for Nintendo Wii, a $50,000 tournament, and black people are playing. The game’s official.

American Equistock Racing is hoping to ride the success of the drinking game by naming one of their racehorses Beer Pong. BP was the sixth horse in the fourth race at Saratoga on Friday.

American Equistock has a horse named Clemens in their stable too. To my knowledge the horse has never used steroids or performance enhancing drugs. Hopefully Beer Pong the game won’t suffer the shame, humiliation, and fall from grace that Roger Clemens is experiencing.

As far as Beer Pong goes.. He placed second in the race and paying some good change.

The first beer pong game for the Nintendo Wii, Game Party, was introduced last year and it was received pretty well. The second beer pong game for Nintendo Wii, Frat Party, has not been met with the same enthusiasm.

“Frat Party Games-Beer Pong” has come under fire from school coalitions, a state attorney general, and now Nintendo has succumbed to the pressure. The founders of JV Games (and creators of Frat Party) aren’t happy.

Their game, originally titled Frat Party Games – Beer Pong, was renamed to the more family friendly Frat Party Games – Pong Toss.

This conflicts with some of Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime’s statements last year about how “Nintendo will not do any screening of ideas” on WiiWare. JV Games co-founder Vince Valenti recalls how they “had a little discussion with Nintendo and there were some angry parties.” The two founders were shocked by Nintendo’s reaction. As Valenti puts it, his company’s use of the word “beer” was “just like you would hear in any movie or on TV.” Co-founder Jag Jaeger said they “wanted to focus on the sport of beer pong, not the alcohol that’s associated with it.”

It’s weak for Nintendo to force changes to the game just because some people got upset. All of the shoot ‘em up video games get endless criticism and yet they keep cranking them out. And even with the changes the game is still beer pong whether you say it in the title or not.

Watchout MMA. Beer pong is making a push to become America’s favorite sport that combines competition and killing brain cells. If there’s a beer pong movie it can’t be long before we’re watching drunk people bounce ping pong balls into cups on ESPN or Versus.

As for the movie, it was written and directed by Dan Lindsay who attempts to cut “through the drunken fog that has shaped the public’s perception of the game and examines the players‘ competitive nature, their reluctance to “grow up,” and their desire for fame and glory.” Good luck with that because at the end of the day it’s alcoholics in training.

If you like to drink competitively without having to set-up some cups on a table you can play Beer Pong on the Nintendo Wii. Game Party was released last year and features a game called “Ping Cup”. The guys at JV Games Inc. think they’ve raised the bar.

Featuring two distinct competitive games, Frat Party Games™ – Beer Pong will offer a traditional tournament-style game of Beer Pong for one to four players and Speed Pong, during which two to three players compete at the same time, each trying to be the first to eliminate all of his or her cups.

At the rate that Beer Pong is growing it won’t be long before BP highlights are shown on ESPN and the game is recognized by the Olympics. The sport is getting so big that bars are adding Beer Pong setups, tournaments are held for big money, and there’s a documentary about the World Series of Beer Pong. There’s also a Frat Party Beer Pong website and myspace page. The game is only available via WiiWare, but if the XBox and Playstation people are smart, they’re developing a Beer Pong game right now. They don’t wanna miss out on the chance to give lazy college students an easier way to get drunk.

I don’t play beer pong but I have no problem keeping you informed with the latest beer pong news. I’ve already posted about beer pong on the Wii, a 50k bp tournament, and the first black beer pong player. That’s the positive side of the game, but now I have to issue a warning. Do play beer pong with sharp objects nearby. Why? From Orlando’s Local6.com:

A 27-year-old man is accused of stabbing three people during a drinking game called “beer pong” at a Fernandina Beach home.

“They got into an argument over, possibly, some money,” Fernandina Beach Police Capt. David Bishop said. “There was alcohol involved — possibly drugs. These people were asked to leave. They didn’t leave, got into a fight, and then somebody pulled a knife.”

That somebody was Daniel White and he’s been charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He’s clearly not helping beer pong’s cause.. It might have been a 5 a.m., money and drug fueled knife fight but nobody’s gonna remember it that way. It’ll be “hey, you hear about that guy that stabbed 3 people over beer pong”. Incidents like this are why the STL Beer Pong headquarters have a no stabbing rule on the front page.

With the World Series of Beer Pong wrapping up, and Black History Month a few weeks away, it’s time to pay homage to a pioneer. Justin Williams, aka J-Murdah, bka The First Black Beer Pong Player, has opened doors for people like Barack Obama and me. It takes a great man to fight injustice alone.. I can only hope to be half as brave as Justin Williams.

No longer do brothas have to stay home, huddled around a Wii to play beer pong. We can bounce balls into cups in public like the white man. We will still have to find our Larry Bird or Steve Nash to their Lebron James, but at least we’re in the game. The only controversy that remains is whether the Beer Pong Hall of Fame will include J-Murdah’s stats from the Negro Pong leagues. They should, it’s the right thing to do.

I had no idea that beer pong or Beirut was such a big deal to so many people. I thought it was something you do in college and eventually grow out of. I was wrong. Brian Foley, of The College Baseball Blog, passed along this World Series of Beer Pong press release. I was interested from the start.

Sign ups begin this week for the third annual World Series of Beer Pong (WSOBP), a three-day competitive beer pong extravaganza with a $50,000 Grand Prize—the largest prize in the history of beer pong. This year’s event will be held January 1 – 5, 2008 at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada.

$50k to drink beer and bounce balls in cups.. In Vegas. I might need to put together my own team… Email me if you’re down.. If you thought beer pong was just about getting drunk, you’re right, but you’re wrong. WSOBP co-founder Billy Gaines:

Video games are blamed for turning American kids into fat, lazy, slackers. I don’t know how many hours of my life I lost to Atari, Odyssey, Coleco and Intelli vision, the Commodore 64,
Nintendo, Genesis, Playstations and X-Box, but I do know those systems never got me drunk. The Wii is here to change that.

Video game publisher Midway has a new game coming out for the Wii system. “Party Game” will consist of several games including shuffleboard, darts, and ski ball, but the game that will take over college campuses this fall is Wii beer pong. Or Wii Beirut. Or “Ping Cup” as Midway refers to it:

The object of ping cup is to use the Wii remote to throw a ping-pong ball at a pyramid of cups.

They left off the part about getting hammered drunk… The good thing about the game is it’ll give Greg Oden a chance to work on his beer pong skills. The bad news is, it might put these aspiring entrepreneurs out of business.
