Towson, in the city of Towson and just north of Baltimore, is having problems all across campus. The football team is catching drug charges and the sororities aren’t too bright. Two Towson Tiger football players were arrested on drug charges although the police aren’t saying much:

Senior cornerback Eric Clark and junior linebacker Trent Covington, once stars of the Towson Tiger football program, are now suspended from the school after Baltimore County police say they arrested the two Thursday night at their apartment in Cockeysville. Police won’t talk about it, citing an ongoing investigation.

I guess when the team’s 3-4 (1-4 in conference) getting picked up by the cops is a positive… At least you don’t have to play for the team anymore.. An arrest and an investigation are a long way from a conviction, but since the school is so close to B-more, it’s possible these 2 cats caught Wireitus. Cut the football team some slack…

Because the sororities at Towson University are goin wild. Not quite late night infomercial wild, but wild enough to get put on party probation.

The drinking pictures came from before and during September’s Bid Day, when sororities recruit new members. Current members literally tackle the recruits. Reports say that some students were injured in the tackling, and some students were charged with underage drinking, even though there was no apparent evidence of drinking among the pledges. Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Phi Mu, Phi Sigma Sigma and Zeta Tau Alpha are banned from organizing social activities until spring break.

Sorority girls.. drinking pictures.. Facebook.. Please tell me more. Unfortunately the pics are gone now, but if somebody happens to find some, please pass them along.

I was cruising around Show Hype, the latest creation from the folks that brought us Ball Hype, when I came across an article in the New Yorker about The Wire. Actually, the article is about David Simon, the creator of HBO’s The Wire, but The Wire is the main topic for 2/3 of the story. Here are some of the things I picked up from article about the upcoming final season of the best show on television.

Gus Haynes, a newspaper editor, will be a high profile character as the show explores the world of journalism.

Mayor Carcetti will still be a major player.

Dukie dies? Maybe, maybe not. There’s also mention of one character finding a way out, so maybe Dukie makes good.

These were my favorite random Wire moments from the piece:

A junkie gave up his dope to Andre Royo (Bubbles) saying “Man, you need a fix more than I do”.

Somebody got shot and staggered onto the set.

“Snoop” caught some people bootlegging The Wire and called David Simon to see what she should do about them.

If you’re reading this and you have no idea what I’m talking about, shame on you. I’m smf at you. Go buy the past seasons on dvd, catch them ondemand, do what you have to do, but get up to speed so you can watch the final season of the best show on television. A show that will not go out with a bs Soprano’s type of ending.

As much as people praise the show, it has never won an Emmy, and it averages 4.4 million viewers per week. That sounds like a lot until you see that the Soprano’s averaged 13 million and even Big Love averages 6 million. This makes sense since the show was a hard sell to HBO in the first place. David Simon had to challenge the cable giant to show some balls:

It is a significant victory for HBO to counter program alternative, inaccessible worlds against standard network fare. But it would, I will argue, be a more profound victory for HBO to take the essence of network fare and smartly turn it on its head, so that no one who sees HBO’s take on the culture of crime and crime fighting can watch anything like “C.S.I.” or “N.Y.P.D. Blue” or “Law & Order” again without knowing that every punch was pulled on those shows. For HBO to step toe-to-toe with NBC or ABC and create a cop show that seizes the highest qualitative ground through realism, good writing, and a more brutal assessment of police, police work, and the drug culture—this may not be the beginning of the end for network dramas as the industry standard, but it is certainly the end of the beginning for HBO.

Good thing the man can put together an email. For all of you Wire junkies, the show will be back in January. If you’re a fan of David Simon, he’ll still be putting in work for HBO. The next show will focus on musicians in New Orleans.

If gambling was abolished, do you know who would suffer the most? The NFL and the NBA referees. Regardless of the NFL’s official stance on wagering, the reason the league is so popular is because of the violence, gambling, and video games. But I’m not here to call the NFL a bunch of hypocrites, I’m here to salute the gridiron gladiators. I am entertained and hopefully my picks do likewise.

I’m superstitious, so I never pick for or against my favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. The home team is in bold type.

Houston -3 over Kansas City: I didn’t see a lot of the Texans in preseason but I saw all of Hard Knocks.

Buffalo +3 over Denver: The Broncos are gonna have a nice season but it’ll get off to a slow start in upstate New York. Under 37 is tempting.

Pittsburgh -4.5 over Cleveland: The Browns aren’t gonna put it together over 1 summer.

Tennessee +6.5 over Jacksonville: The rule of thumb is to decide which team you think is going to win outright, and then bet on that team. I’m breaking the rule. The Jaguars win a close game.

St. Louis -1 over Carolina: If the Rams are gonna be who I think they are, they have to win this game.

Minnesota -3 over Atlanta: Joey Harrington is 1-4 lifetime vs. Minnesota. 0-4 at the Dome. The lone win came last year at home in Miami.

Miami +3 over Washington: I’m not expecting a lot from either of these teams this season but I like Miami a little more.

NYJ +6.5 over New England. I can make an argument for both teams in this game. That makes me think the game will be close.

Seattle -6 over Tampa Bay: Holmgren vs. Gruden. Hasselbeck vs. Garcia. I like the Seahawks in those matchups and the game.

San Diego -6 over Chicago: One of these teams will be almost as good as last year and the other’s qb is gonna end up costing them.

Detroit +1.5 over Oakland: It wouldn’t be Oakland if they didn’t start the season with a quarterback controversy.. Which should start about midway through the 2nd quarter.

Dallas -5.5 over NYG: The Cowboys offense gets all of the attention but that defense is gonna be really tough up front.

Cincinnati -2.5 over Baltimore: If the game was in Baltimore, I would pick the Ravens.

San Francisco -3 over Arizona: Every year is the year that the Cardinals are gonna turn it around. This might really be their time, but not this week.
