Twitter is the social networking flavor of the month that’s stormed on the scene like MySpace and FaceBook. There’s no telling how long the site’s popularity will last; the next big thing could have 130 or 150 characters and blow Twitter out of the water like seven minute abs did to eight minute abs.

Athletes are using Twitter to cut the media middleman and let us, the fans, into their personal lives. Here’s what some popular jocks were tweeting about yesterday.

Dwight Howard went to a Beyonce Concert:

Bill Simmons isn’t an athlete, but writing about them for a living is good enough to get you on this list. Where’s LeBron headed next year?:

Titans running back Chris Johnson gets Twitter.. He might need a YouTube 101 class tho:

Lance Armstrong gets tested a lot:

What I believe is the real, real Ron Artest was talking about fake signings:

Dwight Howard should start following Dennis Scott if he’s not following him, and he’ll probably stop following him if he already is:

After trying to get his followers to cry with him over Bambi, Ochocinco explained his Cincinnati workout routine:

Jason Brown is an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens, but apparently he wishes he was on American Idol instead of in the NFL. As the saying goes, he shouldn’t quit his day job.

I gave Brown the benefit of the doubt and said the stereo system made him sound like crap until I found out he did another equally poor performance of the same song.

Ok.. I’m gonna give Jason Brown a break. The big fella learned one song and is gonna sing it every chance he gets no matter how bad he sounds. According to Jason he’s a lover and fighter. According to me he’s a football player that should never touch a microphone again.

Jason Brown isn’t the only member of the Baltimore Ravens that likes to sing in front of a crowd.

University of South Carolina campus police have been targeting the school’s athletes according to a member of the USC board of trustees. Eddie Floyd has been a trustee for the University of South Carolina since 1982, and says he has reliable sources that told him of the campus police misconduct.

University of South Carolina campus police have been targeting the school’s athletes according to a member of the USC board of trustees. Eddie Floyd has been a trustee for the University of South Carolina since 1982, and says he has reliable sources that told him of the campus police misconduct.

From TheState.com:

“I feel they have overstepped in some areas. After talking to some of the people, this is how I feel. And I always say what I feel, good or bad.”

“My feeling is that (targeting athletes) has happened. I’m sure the administration may have a different opinion. But certainly that’s what I think.”

Mike Mungo is the board’s longest serving trustee with 36 years of service, and he doesn’t think there’s anything to Eddie Floyd’s claims.

“I don’t think anyone has targeted (athletes) whatsoever. I think the allegations are totally baseless, and I think I’m as well-informed as anyone at the university.”

The campus police better keep an eye on Eddie Floyd and Mike Mungo. They sound like they could be coming to blows at any minute.

Since January 1 nine University of South Carolina student-athletes have been arrested. Six of those arrests were made by the campus police. I don’t know if that proves that the police are targeting athletes or that the athletes need to quit getting into trouble on campus.

For some reason the people that pitch us shaving cream and razors think we need to see two athletes lathered up and having a good time in the bathroom for us to consider buying their product. But what about two men applying shaving cream to one another while handling razorblades is supposed to be appealing? I can’t be the only one that thinks there’s something weird about being crammed in a little bathroom with your homeboy breathing on your neck and checking you out in the mirror’s reflection.

Brett Favre and Reggie White use the classic ‘Old guy teaching young guy’ model that led to David Robinson schooling Tim Duncan about shaving gel.

“What about the gnomes?” That shit floors me every time.

Japanese ad execs have the same ‘two athletes together’ theory so they hooked up Mixed Martial Artist Mark Coleman and Wanderlei Silva.

February 29th is just another day to me. I don’t buy any of the Leap Year superstitions, and I don’t do anything special for our extra day. I am, however, amazed that a bunch of goofballs in tights could figure out that the Earth circles the sun in 365 1/4 days.

Since the Leap Year is every 4 years, people with a birthday on February 29th get shortchanged.. And I’ve always wondered how they decided which day to celebrate their birthday in a non Leap Year. Do they have to pick February 28th or March 1st or can they go with the closest weekend? I would want the closest weekend.

So which athletes were born in a Leap Year? I’m glad you asked.

Athletes with Leap Year Birthdays:

The PGA is gonna try to drum up interest in the FedEx Cup Playoffs with a series of “Golfer meets Athlete” commercials. Go here if you have no idea about the Cup and how it works. The running theme is the golfers are seeking advice because they’re in their first playoff. Here’s Sergio Garcia trying to work on his game face:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTfHjaKBXuQ]

Since Serg sounds like a 14 year old, it’s gonna be hard for him to intimidate anybody.

Jim Furyk turns to Jerome Bettis:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIarPkrWK5g]

Jerome likes to eat..I didn’t know that. They need to cut a commercial with Angel Cabrera. I picture Angel sitting in a foggy room, smoking a cigarette, and asking Ray Lewis for playoff advice.

Here’s a Tiger commercial, which according to this article, is not the one that will be running. The official commercial shows Tiger lacing up his shoes and whistling “Eye of the Tiger”. He’s sticking with the “No living man shall tell me shit” theme in this ad:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWhfGyFyKvI]

I don’t know when that was shot, but Tiger’s been eating better since then.

If you haven’t had enough of these sidebusters check out Ernie Els and Phil Simms.
