Allen Iverson is currently out of the NBA and the chance of him getting back in the League don’t look good so AI has to find other ways to keep busy. An idle Iverson isn’t always a good thing as negativity tends to find him but for a night he put his free time to excellent use. He took his little sister Ieisha to her prom. The move made him a great big brother, the most popular guy at the party and the lead suspect in the punch spiking.

Allen Iverson and the Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to give up on the A.I. coming off the bench experiment. The Grizzlies waived Iverson on Monday and he’ll be a free agent Wednesday if he clears waivers. Something tells me he will.

The Knicks are already being thrown around as Iverson’s next destination but unless he’s starting and getting meaningful minutes it’ll end the same as Memphis. I don’t wanna see Iverson go out like this especially since I believe he has some game left. The problem is AI doesn’t have the night in, night out carry a team ability anymore but you can’t tell him that. He could be a solid contributor coming off the bench on a contender. He’d obviously rather start for some scrubs.

The Memphis Grizzlies granted Allen Iverson permission to leave the team indefinitely to deal with a personal matter. Something urgent enough that Grizzlies owner Michael Eisley feels it shouldn’t be reported. Barbershop talk says A.I. wore out his welcome in Memphis. Eisley says he’ll be back but they need to work on his role.

Iverson doesn’t want to come off the bench and the Grizzlies don’t want him to start. The team wins that battle but the two sides have to figure out a way to play nice until Dec. 15 when A.I.’s eligible to be traded.

Answers few and far between on Allen Iverson’s future in Memphis [True Hoop]

Saying Allen Iverson‘s 2008-09 season was a bad one falls short of explaining how many things went wrong for A.I. He got traded, hurt, and exiled. He had to watch his former team make it to the Western Conference finals while taking the blame for his new squad’s failures.

Iverson signed with the Memphis Grizzlies last month in a move that signals to many the end is near for one of the league’s greatest little men. He might have some game left but NBA GMs obviously feel the entire A.I. package is too much for their team to take on.

Scoop Jackson sat down with Allen Iverson for a two-part conversation and gave Allen the chance to talk about last season. Of course he goes in:

And they told me, straight up, “Allen, we would never disrespect you or your career like that,” by making me come off the bench. That’s what they told me to my face. And after that, I never thought about it again. I just went back to playing. Then [not long after that] they came to me saying that they felt it would be in the best interest of the team if I came off of the bench behind Rip.

if you are a head coach and you feel strongly about this, what would make you think that I want to be around these guys — especially if you are telling me that they don’t want to be around me like that? (Pauses.) Like when I got hurt, I was like, I’ll come in and get my treatment every day when they are not around and I’ll get outta there. I’d never been on a team where a coach told me the guys gave up on me. You know what I mean? And I kept this under wraps the whole time. I never said anything. Because I didn’t want to bad-mouth any of those guys.

Man, people have been waiting for me to fall off my whole career. From the first time I stepped on the court. It probably made people sick to their stomachs watching my whole career, watching the things that I’ve done in my career. “And the first time that he goes backwards, that’s the time we attack his a–.” That’s the way it is, and I understand fully what it is and how it is being Allen Iverson. I know when people get their chances to take their shots at me they’re going to do it. And I don’t expect them not to. I’ve accomplished too many things in the league that the people that criticize me in the league didn’t think I could do. Especially at my size. Everybody thought that eventually I would break down. Well, I haven’t broken down.

Now, when I was there, we won 50 games and got beat by San Antonio [in the playoffs] the first year. The next year we win 50 games, and start off in the playoffs against the Lakers. Kobe has a monster series, and we get beat by them. Now last year, when I’m not there, they win, what, 54 games? — four more games during the regular season — and who did they face in the first round? Dallas. With a healthy Nene. Now, I’m not taking away anything from what they did, because they did a great job and they had a great playoff run. I mean, they were excellent. But the situation was different, totally different. It was more than just a difference in one player. But no one is going to look at it that way. No one is going to look at it that way when it comes to me. Because it’s easy to point the finger at this dude right here.

You really need to read the entire interview to see where Allen’s coming from. He makes some good points, but there are others that I can’t walk with him on.. Like the “Coming off the bench” situation in Detroit. Whether the Pistons did or didn’t tell him he was gonna come off the bench, they’re allowed to do whatever they want. Phil Jackson could bring Kobe Bryant off the bench, (If he wanted to risk being strangled to death.) and everyone in the world would say it’s a dumb idea, but he’s the head coach. The Pistons were trying to do what was best for their franchise, not Allen Iverson.

The part Iverson nailed is when he talks about the media looking to play up the negative in any situation Allen’s involved. The “Practice” soundbite has been turned into Allen hating practice instead of what he was actually saying “A press conference about practice is stupid.” The idea that Allen’s departure from Denver is the reason the Nuggets got better was lazy reasoning. As he said there were other circumstances that led to the Nuggets’ success and in the end, they lost to the Lakers again.

Overall A.I. reads like a guy that is hurt by the way he was portrayed in the media last year. Whether the coverage was fair or not, Allen believes it was wrong all together and he’s out to prove something this season.

Allen Iverson hasn’t found a new NBA job so he’s spending the summer relaxing in his home state of Virginia. AI was reportedly hanging out with Michael Vick at a strip club, and he recently cut the rug at his celebrity basketball game.

AI and Michael Vick at a strip club is probably a bad look in the eyes of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. A worse look for Iverson is his turban/French Foreign Legion head gear. At least he didn’t play with the towel on his head.. Oh, wait, he did?

Good to see AI enjoying his time in the NBA unemployment line:

A bad back has allowed Detroit Piston Allen Iverson to appear in only three games since March but hasn’t kept him from playing in Detroit’s downtown casinos. AI (and his posse) got a little loud in a card club and in a taxi in Minneapolis earlier in the season, but his behavior in Detroit’s gambling joints has landed him on the banned list.

Iverson is banned from the MGM and Greektown. The NBA is investigating an incident involving one of AI’s bodyguards at Greektown, but most of the blame falls on Allen.

Iverson, though, has been banned mostly for his boorish behavior. He is a bad loser, and he loses a lot, often throwing his chips or cards at the dealer. He has been warned about improper behavior at the tables repeatedly. He is often loud and disruptive, according to witnesses, rude to dealers, other players and the wait staff.

As somebody that will usually find a way to defend AI, all I can say is maybe he’s practicing his passing by throwing chips and cards at dealers. And he’s rude to the dealers, other players, and wait staff to get ready for dealing with the likes of Joey Crawford and Violet Palmer.

AI busted out his latest Reeboks in his return to Philadelphia. They look like some wanna be Js but what do I know? I’d go with the white ones over the black unless I could get some in all black… With “PRACTICE” on the side instead of THXPHILA.

A couple of weeks back Slam dropped the pics of Gilbert Arenas’ latest kicks. Agent Zero and Adidas teamed up with Benihana for the Gil II Zero Benihana Hibachi.

Gil’s not shy about voicing his opinion on the looks of his signature shoes. There’s no way in hell he’s happy with these. And what’s up with the colors? The shoes make it seem like he would play for the Rockets.. or the L.A. Clippers. Hmmm.

Where the hell was I when the “Nene is sprung on a pornstar, that’s why he can’t ball” story broke? Hat tip to Melo… By my simple deductions, this video was shot Monday, April 9th, 2007. Denver had just finished a punishing 4 point victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, giving them a 6 game win streak.. And cause to be out feelin themselves.
