When Kevin Garnett and Stephon Marbury were teamed together with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1996 many thought they were the building blocks of dynasty. Garnett was a straight outta high school 6-11 freak of nature with an inexhaustible motor. Marbury was a one-and-done college baller and slick NYC point guard. The duo made it to the playoffs in their first season together but were eliminated 3-0 by the Houston Rockets. They returned to the playoffs in 1998 and pushed the second-seeded Seattle Supersonics to a Game 5, and showed signs of the budding dynasty.
The interview below shows Marbury and KG in their youthful, raw forms. Bob Costas does the questioning before the crucial Game 5 and the two show why people had high hopes.

It’s funny to see how young KG, Marbury, (Steph still hasn’t grown into his head) and hell, even Costas look but the real comedy comes at the four minute mark when Hannah Storm, John Salley, and Peter Vecsey talk about Steph and Kevin.
Hannah Storm: “Those two are like a comedy team.”
John Salley: “When you talk about the new NBA we always hear how these guys don’t respect the league. These two guys are different.”
Peter Vecsey: “Glen Taylor’s the billionaire owner of the Timberwolves and if he needs a little extra coin to keep these two kids together I will gladly chip in because they are fun listening to and absolutely fun watching.”
As we know now, Steph’s 1998 contract negotiations didn’t work out and he ended up forcing his way out of Minnesota in 1999. What could’ve been. Fast-forward 12 years and KG’s ailing knees have a championship ring and Marbury’s eating Vaseline on Youtube. Vecsey was right because Marbury is still fun to watch in the same way a fight is fun to watch until one person is getting pummeled unmercifully.
